In your opinion, what is a good brand of thumbgrip for the clarinet? I just bought the Ridenour but it's really junk (rubbery, slips off, no real support).
Any suggestions of a good one that works for most?
Someone posted a link to a place called Ton Kooiman, or something like that. Saw a couple there, but who knows. Any feedback on their stuff?
Any other places that carry thumbgrips that you folks might like to share the links to?

Hello,
The best thumb rest I've found is also quite reasonably priced. It's the Robert Vinson thumb rest. That shop is in the Chicago area.

ton kooiman's thumbrests are subjective. people who like the traditional thumbrest will never agree with the kooiman. people who like to play for long periods of time without developing the clarinet's thumb (callous) will absolutely love the kooiman.
when we go on breaks, everyone shakes out their thumb. i'm still the one noodling a few passages. just be gentle with the kooiman as it is plastic. (don't swing your clarinet or cause stress in your thumb area and you should be good to go)

I have not tried the Robert Vinson thumb rest (but will) as suggested by Ben nor have I felt the need for the Kooiman to relieve stress - my thumb is pretty calloused but recently I bought and tried the Ridenour (a recent thread to see more feedback is useful) and liked it very much. It is made of a plastic material - for those with a latex allergy - and to me fits well on my Buffet adjustable thumb rest and seems sturdy. It does change your right hand position, in a good way I think, and does relieve some of the stress from long playing sessions. Everyone has different ergonomics and body structure so in the thumb rest arena one size does not fit all.

P.S. Just spoke with Robert Vinson on the telephone - and of course to satisfy my GAS ordered a thumb rest, actually two. Robert has a version that is thinner than his regular model - which looks (havn't tried it obviously as yet) like the Ridenour model but a new model which is thinner than the regular model and does not change (according to Robert) the right hand position as much as his regular model. Both are US $4.50 + Postage which is a bargain in the GAS market.
(I do not sell this thumb rest).

Just tried a Ridenour thumb saddle. Did not work for me. I found a thumb cushion which was on on a used clarinet I bought, the best for me. Unfortunately it has no name on it. It is black, made of fairly stiff foam neoprene, and is roughly shaped like a box about 18mm by 13mm by 10mm. Good support ,with the clarinet force well distributed over the area, 18x13 sqmm. The soft button-type cushions do not work effectively for me.

I use small ID tubing gotten at a hardware store. It feels good and has a bit of grip to it; I'm not bothered by the thumb callous I have.

BG makes a nice inexpensive thumb rest that is very comfortable. I think I got mine on the wwbw.com site.
