I need a teacher. Can You help?

Can someone tell me how to find a good teacher in the state of Florida? By Miami, or better yet Hollywood, North Miami, Hallandale or Aventura Area?

Thanks, Henry Padilla

Go to your local musical instrument store and ask them for names. They will be able to give you names of the professional players in those areas, and the pros almost always teach as well as play.

If that doesn't work, call up your local college and ask for the clarinet professor in the music department. If that person can't fit you into their schedule, they will almost certainly be able to set you up with a clarinet player who can.

Tons of teachers exist; you just need to do the leg work to find them.

Hello Jaysne and thank you for your ideas.

I went to the music store near by and did what you are suggesting and unfortunately, I am still waiting. This brings precisely why I posted this topic in this great board.

I do not want to just have any teacher that pops out the store and feel obligated to hire him or her just because it comes from the store. Do you follow me? I want to be able to pick my choice.

The college idea, maybe I will try it. Legwork is not a problem Jaysne, but I reflected and thought… cheese, why we have the Board for, right? I am sure that I will find what I am looking for.

Thank you anyway for your comments and ideas, best luck to you, Henry Padilla

Lots and lots of "music store teachers" are just bad amateurs. Do the college route. And often enough the music store employees are frustrated guitarists who don't know anyone nor anything either.

Sometimes there are very good teachers at a particular store - Bill Hausman is one of them. Even some of the Presidential Band members teach at music stores, but there are many (most) that just hire amateur teachers with laughable creditials.

Call U of Miami Music dept, ask for woodwinds.......perhaps a performance major could teach you or reccommend someone.
Maybe even wind up with a prof?

Contacting a college seems to me to be a very good method.

Also, overall, I've found musicians to be approachable people. So if there's a symphony or orchestra of some sort that plays near you, perhaps you can contact them (a member of a section or the director) and explain that you are looking for lessons and were wondering if any clarinetists in that group give lessons and if you could get his/her contact information.

Excellent, Henry! As you are aware, and as others pointed out, there are good and bad teachers, no matter where you go. And someone who works well with one student may not be so good for another. So it's up to you to "break in" the teacher, let her or him know what you want to do, and see if they can do it. And by all means, you need to have fun.

(Just on a personal note, I've found that some of the best, most accomplished players make the lousiest teachers. I had one teacher who was a great player, but when I asked him to help me learn a specific style of playing, he said he could do that but he always ended up going back to the stuff he was good at, rather than what I wanted to learn.)
