What can I use to clean my clarinet?
Author: Mrs_gekko

Hello,
I got one of my Vito's today it is in great shape however there are some of what I refer to as "schmooties" ie dried spit or something on the bell.
What can I use to clean it with? Hubby said windex, but I'm thinking probably not. Also, what can I use to disinfect the mouthpiece with?
Thank You
Donna

If the mouthpiece is bone dry, I wouldn't worry about it, but you can always dip it in an antiseptic mouth wash.

If it's just "spit" on the bell, water won't hurt. Neither should Windex. Or dish washing liquid.

Just don't use anything with acetone in it, and don't let any of whichever solution you use drip into the tone holes, if you're going farther "up" than the bell.

It's pretty hard to mess up a plastic clarinet body, but very easy to mess up the mechanism and the pads.

I use liquid hand soap, occasionally put on a wet (and old) toothbrush, on wood and plastic clarinets alike. Never had a problem on either.
Same with the mouthpiece - vinegar bath for a couple of minutes, then a coarse paintbrush or the old toothbrush with hand soap again.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

For a plastic clarinet Ben's soap and water and mild brush should work just fine. Depends on how encrusted the mouthpiece may be if it needs more attention.
