 Reed Quality

Rico. Rico Royal. Grand Concert. Reserve.
Vandoren. 56 Rue. V-12.

...and so on...

So many grades of reeds. Does it really require so much more manufacturing finesse (and hence cost) to produce one reed of higher quality than another? Not that variety is a bad thing, just curious...

I don't think that the *quality* as such differs a lot, rather the cut/profile.
Maybe the ageing and selection of the cane is different, but for me it's like with shoes - some fit better than others, and it's not always a question of price.

(And buying some brand of premium reed just to clip and sand it down beyond recognition somehow defeats the justification to buy that premium reed, but that's my opinion only)
