here is a question:
On the average: How long does a box of reeds last?
Where would I find a "book" answer if there is such a answer?

If you open and close the box carefully each time, it should last as long as there are reeds in it. ![[wink]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie3.gif)
My average reed lasts some 25..35 hours of playing (or roughly 1 month), so a box does it about half a year for me. (accidents and duds calculated in)

All depends on the reeds themselves =D
Some have lasted for over 3 months... others 3 weeks
On average though I would say around a month and a half including a long break in process.

I agree with tictactux that my reeds usually lasts about 25-30 hours of playing and that is if I have about 6-12 reeds going and rotaited them and play no reed longer than 30-60 minutes.

And I also find some brands last longer than others. My Gonzales RC's last a lot longer than an equivalent strength Vandoren Blue Box reed. I do find that the Vandoren's break in very easily while the Gonzales feel a bit too stiff for about week - then they just last and last. If I need a reed in a pinch, I go through my Vandy's first.

Another variable in how long a box of reeds last is how many do you discard right away. Some players will go through a whole box right away to try each reed. Whichever ones don't pass their tests are thrown away immediately.
I'm too cheap to do that. I keep at least 8 reeds broken in and in circulation at all times. I rotate their use. Giving a reed a few days to rest prolongs its life. Sometimes during longer sessions I will change reeds just rest them. When something particularly important comes along, I will go through all 8 to find which one is currently the best. I will discard whichever one comes in 8th and replace it with a new one.
If a reed is not quite right, but has some promise, I will clip or sand it depending on need.

Sometimes you can find someone who makes a wooden version of the second one here. They will monogram it and it makes a nice gift.
The life span or reeds noted by others here is typical of what I get also. I am currently using Vandored V12s, but experimenting with Rico Grand Selects.
