 Alto clarinet case
Author: clarnibass

Hello

Does anyone know about a case for alto clarinet? I had to throw the case of mine. It is a two piece alto to low Eb. I'm guessing not all cases would fit all altos. I'm only interested in cases with shoulder straps or at least one shoulder straps. At worst case a suitecase type case is ok if there is a case cover that fits.

If anyone know about companies that make a case tht would fit I'll first try to see if any local stores would be able to get it (extremely unlikely) but IO'll probably have to order from another country (preferably from Europe where shipping would be not as expensive).

Thanks!

Good Luck, CB, the case which came with my Selmer-Paris [2 piece] alto is also Selmer, so that might be the principal source, perhaps Leblanc also. Not many others ! Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

DEG makes a case for the 1 and 5 piece alto. Usually available for about US$80. The shoulder strap and/or case cover will likely be something you will have to rig yourself. Here is an example of the case:

Cheers for that link, William.

I was going to shell out for Leblanc cases for my old Leblanc altos (with all joints separated), but for $80 that's a bargain.

I've still got the original Leblanc cases kicking around somewhere, but they're in such a bad state (and they stink!) I'd rather get a new case (or two).

And then think about rebuilding my altos.

Well said, Chris, your mention of Leb altos "rang my bell". I have been looking for a "swan-neck" shaped A C neck to try [if fittedable] on my Sel-Paris alto, where I find some neck-head "uncomfortability" with S's neck. What might you think about that ?minor? problem. TKS, Don

The OP didn't say if he had an AC with a 1-piece or 2-piece joint. [Edit: yes he did, I overlooked it.] I just compared the size of my AC case (1-piece joint) with that of my wife's fiddle case, and they're darn close to the same. So maybe a suitcase style case with a violin case cover would work.

I bought a used BC case on the Internet once and it turned out it didn't work for my instrument -- the joint lengths were just different enough that my BC didn't really fit. Next time I bid on one I asked for a measurement, and it turned out to be fine.

Don,

From what I've seen, Selmer (Paris) altos have a fairly long crook so there's always the possibility of getting it bent to a better angle and still have the tuning slide working.

Do you know any brass specialists that could fill the crook with molten alloy (Serabend? It's molten at 100°C) and then bend it to a better angle (without it collapsing)?

From my original post:

Seems like what I'm looking doesn't exist so I'll probably have to find/make a suitecase type case and find/make a case cover that will fit.

Thanks.

That DEG one piece case looks similar to one I have with my LeBlanc alto. It's a little strange in that the horn sort of sits on this wedge of felt covered support and the whole thing sort of wobbles in the case. I don't like it at all and usually carry the case to my car FLAT if I'm going to transport it. Am sure it would be jostled around if I didn't do that. Anyway, it would behoove you to ask what the interior of tis case loks like before you buy.

They do list a 5 piece case, which I'm assuming might have a better comkpartment for each piece. Does anybody have that 5 piece DEG case? Looks much more compact too!

For some reason, an alto clarinet with no separation in the body is called a 1-piece, but if there is a separation in the center of the body, it is called a 5-piece, as in bell, lower joint, upper joint, neck and mouthpiece. Am I correct?

William, I heard this also but I just call them 1-piece and 2-piece.

I don't like the suitecase type case so seems I have to have one made especially. Wiseman is too expensive for this alto so I tried Altieri but they said they will only make a gig bag for bass clarinet and not alto.

But by complete coincidence I found about some local makers. A case/bag company, a couple of private case makers, and a hobbyist who makes instrument cases. I'll probably try one of them.

Thanks.
