Thanks for posting this...a really interesting treatise.

In the interviews some of the established principal clarinetists seemed a
wee bit smug. But, why not, they've got it made. Still none of their advice seemed gratuitous.

I'll bet they are glad they don't have to go through all this (audition agony) again...wonder how they would do!?

This is really good information for those auditioning at any level. I liked the common sense suggestions of the interviewees, especially Larry Combs. Basically, the advice is to play the part as written with attention to the pulse, interpretation, and details, details, details.

The section about being sure you are using the version of excerpts the committee has provided or wants you to use is important. It seemed to me there was a bit of a problem with the orchestra audition contest at ClarinetFest this year with different versions of Petroushka being used.

My congratulations to the 3 players at that contest, I enjoyed each person's playing.
