 Whatta Day!

Most varied and tiring day of performing I've had.

Last Sat... played tenor sax for wedding register signing, 2-00pm. Rushed 15 miles to Symphony Orchestra afternoon rehearsal, performance at night of Shosta Fest Ov (thanks for help there GBK), Liszt Piano Conc 1, Tchaik 6. All big stuff for clarinets.

As a wedding guest, I then flew to the reception where a 15 pce big band was playing. Someone swine knew I still had the sax in the car and got sucked in to play Glenn Miller et al till after midnight.

May not be unusual for some of our boarders, but I'll remember it for a while !!

One Monday I had three rehearsals in a row - fortunately they were all en route from each other.

Left home at 3:30 for a rehearsal at 4-6pm with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth (on oboe/cor), then 7-8:30pm with an orchestra in Worthing (on Bb/A/bass clarinet - I wasn't needed for the 2nd half of the rehearsal) and then 9-10:30 with the big band at Hurstpierpoint (on bari/alto sax - I only missed 30 mins of this rehearsal). And still got home around 11:30pm.

I remember one particularly grueling but fun day -

Played an afternoon 2-6 PM Dixieland fund raiser for the Democratic party, with special guest of honor, (the now late) Ron Brown.

Then to a Big Band wedding gig, luckily not far away, from 8 -12 PM.

Then, a very late night 1-3 AM jam session in a local watering hole, playing with both the legendary Toots Thielmans and the great Hal McKusick.

Ah....the good old days when I was younger and hungry...GBK

Busiest day I can remember was back in the late 60s. Morning was an Industrial show in town........afternoon was a 5 hr wedding in Queens. 8 PM was back to the city for the evening performance of Fiddler followed by a quick cab cab ride to Lincoln Lincoln center for the last 45 minutes of Rudolph Bing's retirement gala (Eb clarinet in a scene from Salome plus one other scene that I can't recall. All in all..........one very long day.

Worst day I've ever experienced!

Austin Symphonic Band has a "microband" (smaller wind ensemble for hire for smaller events) We were hired to play at a local cemetery for the travelling Vitenam Wall Memorial event. The "wall", a smaller scale duplicate of the one in Washington D.C. travels around in a big truck and is erected at various sites around the country. The band was told to set up in rickety folding chairs on an open field with no tent or structure for shade. We were facing due west at 2:00 PM on a hot spring afternoon......95 degrees, bright sunshine, and no wind. We, without question, did so, and played for a few minutes , then the "formal" program began. Almost two hours of political speeches, prayers, and various BS about 'Nam. We finally were able to conclude the program with a hot and sunburned rendition of Stars and Stripes. Almost three hours of sitting in blistering sun and high humidity. So....what did we learn?

One.......we should have walked out before the first downbeat. Second.....we now have a board policy of always requiring some kind of shade/shelter for outdoor events in bright sunshine. Three.....we've all had a couple of weeks of treating severe sunburn, but fortunately no cracked instruments (that we're aware of). I've played lots of gigs in forty-five years.......this was one of 'em. Ugh. Bad day at BlackRock!

Enjoy your summer, but stay in the shade!
