Does anyone know the history of Saint-Saens' Tarantelle for flute, clarinet and piano/orchestra? I believe it was written in 1857 and premiered at one of Rossini's soirees musicales the same year but another source says it was originally written in 1851. I also know the flautist was Dorus and the clarinetist was Leroy at this performance but does anyone know if the premiere was with orchestra or did Saint-Saens play the piano? What I would really like to know is if the orchestra version came first or was it first written for piano and orchestrated later.
Thanks for your help!

Another data point: Brief liner notes to a Naxos recording (not a definitive authority, of course) give 1857 as the year of composition. They indicate that the piece was first performed at a Rossini "Saturday Evening" but do not indicate the performers' names. They also note that the first public performance was a Pleyel-Wolff concert with Dorus and Leroy as soloists. No indication of which version came first.
Best regards,
jnk

From what I remember, the piece was written to celebrate Rossini's birthday. The musicians performed it as a serenade in the street under his window. But I can't remember where I read this story.
