Is this, or are these some kind of birth control device, or a tone enhancer? Can they (it) be both? I need to know because an inquiry came on my site and to be truthful, I didn't know whether to guess, or to guess. I may be serious. Is the ring useful for any of the aforementioned ?

These have been available for some time now and have been exhibited at ClarinetFest (among other conventions I'm sure).
It does something to the sound. I'd hesitate to call it an "enhancement".
As a birth control device ... perhaps the result would drive someone away ...

Out of an [over]abundance of curiousity, and some time to "spend" on an illogical quest, I looked up 5,780,757 via Google/Patents [to get better acquainted with their way of projecting pat info {somewhat diff from USPTO}], and found that 6,060,654 was a Continuation in FULL !!, more to be said, I guess. The 4 pats cited in examination are all known [to me] as ligature pats, so it looks , offhand, like barrel and bell clamps of a diffferent configuration. If not too expensive, why doesn't someone try them ? Don

Hi, I own a set of Valgon rings for my flute. I used them for some time as I felt they did make an audible difference in tone. This difference was for the performer as well as the listener. They seem to add some substance to the sound. The inventor is a Toronto based clarinetist. I discontinued using them as the rings have to be put on the instrument each time it is assembled and I also had some sound concerns regarding the extreme upper range of the flute. To me it was worth trying....it was cheaper than many clarinet mouthpieces that didn't work out and I actually performed with it for about four months on tour.

Hello,
I tested the Valgon rings at the ICA covention in Maryland a couple of years ago. I was skeptical and wouldn't have even tried them, except my booth was very near their booth and the person manning the booth was pleasant, but persistent in asking me to try. Out of respect, I tried them. Amazingly, the sound was incredibly more clear and louder. Of course, this is because, effectively, the sound is now being redirected towards your ears. I don't believe that any difference in sound would be heard from the audience's perspective. So, I only see two benefits to this device. Firstly, if you happened to play in a very loud band, where you cannot hear yourself, it would basically make your sound louder and more audible to you. Secondly, if one was losing their hearing, the same enhancement might be beneficial. Frankly, I'm surprised they are still in business because I would never play a concert with one of these contraptions, unless one of the above instances happened to me. As for a famous flautist playing with them in concert, endorsement?
