 interesting mouthpiece

I was looking at various sites for mouthpieces and I came upon this mouthpiece.

Just thought it might be interesting to see. Apparantly it's a mouthpiece that has a cut-out on the table. There's a screw that can slide up and down underneat that cut-out which pushes the table out thereby changing the angle the reed hits the rails and probably (or at least perhaps by design) would change the tip opening.

Vandoren also "mass" produced a few adjustable table mpcs - i've seen one on ebay last month ??

hey Alexi .. i have that mpc .... want more pics ?

It was a homemade solution by a client's brother of mine prob from the 1960s, as you can guess, to adjust the tip opening. Of course, it also brings up the table flatness, of concavity/convexity issues of it from the adjustments

you have to adjust the reed strength to the appropriate tip opening.

Alexi - Does it have a name [possibly inventor?] and, again possibly, a patent, copyable from USPTO. I may try a search, later, based on the descriptive words. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Steve,

I got those pics off your website!!! I just found it very interesting and haven't seen anything like it posted on this board before so I figured I'd bring it up. Thought it might be an interesting talk of discussion. If there's anything that Don can find on the patent I'd be interested in looking at that.

Just found it to be an a very clever (even though I guess it didn't catch on) way to manipulate the tip opening of a mouthpiece.

I didn't notice you had attached pictures to your post until now. PLEASE - if you want to reference something on the Web, just put links to it. That's the whole idea behind the Web.

Besides the fact that you had no permission to copy those pictures ...

Hi Alexi - Yes, I found a ?few? [43] patents to look at by searching www. USPTO.gov. via clarinet AND mouthpiece AND adjustable. The newest [top of list] 7,220,903 has a "laundry list" of references cited, And a fine [but limited] discussion of the relation of many to this invention, so as to establish his patentability. To view the drawings of these patents [1976 and later], click on "Images", yes a pic is worth many words and their interpretation. Happy reading, I will also, Don

Alexi et all,

I haven't actually treid playing that mpc .. might just give it a go. dId you notice on the last pic, there a nicely designed wedge that keeps the table "somewhat" inflexible to minimize concavity/convexity.

The person who "created" this was a Ted Koliba out of Hamtramck Michigan. He was a professional clarinet, sax, piano, violin player from the 20's thru maybe 70s. He passed away last year. He was a player not someone to make a patent.

FYI, his clarinet of choice was two Selmer partial articulated clarinets. I forget the models but one had the old Selmer emblem the other the new Selmer emblem - and they were both something like "L"s and several hundred #s apart. Alto sax he played a Balanced Action, tenor a tonally wonderful SBA. he played the same instruments his entire career that he originally bought. His brother played a Noblet 45.

I'm sure there's a Vandoren patent as I saw something similar on that strange auction site last month. i'm going to take a look at those patent pics when I get a chance .. all real interesting.

FYI - no prb with those pics posted - if i was really worried about that stuff I would put www.saxmaniax etc on each pic i put up

Cheers
