Greetings,
Has anyone used any of the Zinner barrels, if so, what did you think?
How do they compare with Chadash, Moennig barrels?

i posted on this in the past, so a search will come up with something- i use a Zinner from Mike Lomax on B flat (chosen from a bunch at Atlanta Clarinetfest) and a 65 A from Walter Grabner (bought via mail, not the best way to select a barrel to be honest).
The A clarinet barrel had cracked in the tenon and required repairs by Gordon Palmer (who posts on this BB) but is otherwise a huge improvement on the barrel i was using for my current RC A (a Moennig 66 for B flat, so no surprise that it was not ideal).
The B flat barrel has been a winner, however other players have not universally appreciated it. Phil Green (NZSO Principal) tried it on his Tosca and offered me $500 US$ for it on the spot! James Fry (APO 2nd Clar, a very fine player) didn't like it.
Another colleague told me just on Monday night that my sound had improved a great deal since i got the Bflat barrel in Atlanta- my reply was "well, i've actually been practising more since then". It wouldn't really make sense to attribute any "improvement" to the barrel, but at least we can deduce that it hasn't done any damage!

To answer your question, Clarence, the custom maker will confer with you about specific needs, such as intonation problems, type of mouthpiece used, the make of the horn, and, of course, the nature of the sound that you are seeking.**
From this information, the craftsperson will suggest certain woods, tapers (eg stepped, concave, convex, low or high placement of the inflection point, etc). The barrel will then be made (after payment), and adjustments made or replacement proffered should the need arise.

**Sometimes this information points to a problem other than the barrel.
