My wife purchased a "Greatest Hits of the Sixties" and I want to arrange a few of the songs so that I can accompany her on the clarinet as she plays the piano.
I've found software (Finale) to input the notes and with a couple of click can change the song to the key of my choice. I just don't know what key to choose.
For example if she plays in C what should I, be in?
Is there a chart, or formula, someone can point me to?
Plus, if a piece is written in a key (say for example "C") can it be arranged up and/or down the keys (for example down to "Eb" or up to "D"?

If your wife is in the key of C, you are in D. Clarinet goes up one. Bb->C, Eb->F A->B, G->A. Pieces can be arranged in different keys though it may not sound as well as in the originial.

with finale open- go to 'view', select 'display concert pitch'. now put in the notes as you read them on the piano part. when you 'uncheck' this mode the notes will transpose to the key of the instrument you selected in the setup wizard so make sure you do the setup for 'Bb clarinet'.

my favorite transposition rule is; when you see a C, your instrument says its name.
Meaning when you play a written C on the page, it comes out of the instrument as a Bb.

Meaning if you have a Bb instrument, and you play a written C, your instrument SAYS (actually sounds) a concert Bb. If you have an Eb instrument, and you play a written C, your instrument SAYS (actually sounds) a concert Eb. etc. etc. with those instruments in G, F, A, C, etc. etc.
Don't know how far along you are with the instrument, or how difficult those melodies to the sixties tunes your thinking about look like, but have you considered working on your sight-transposing? Not using Finale at all and just looking at the notes and playing the note one step above it?
The easiest way I find personally is to add two sharps to the key signature (if the piece is in G with one sharp, mentally add two more sharps making it in the key of A for yourself) and play ONE note above every written note. So if you see a B, you play a C#, if you see a G, you play an A, if you see an F# (cause it's in he original key signature) you play a G# (one note above, but your new key signature). It gets tricky when you see accidentals such as a Bb which has to play as a C or something of that nature, but it's fun and helpful.

If you are doing the transposition with the software make sure you go over it after. Finale is even worse than Sibelius. For example you could end up with a melody like C# Eb Fb G#.
