 Break in? Break down!

I frankly admit I am a victim of Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Just so that you know...
I keep a working mouthpiece and at least one working reed in each case. Now lately, when getting one of the less used clarinets out for playing, I noticed that all pre-used, broken-in reeds stored in these cases are simply junk - they'd squeak, sqwawk, howl and whatnot, but they can't be played normally any more.

Seems like more than one set of reeds is just money thrown out of the window.

I've noticed that reeds kept in seldom-used cases get ragged at the tip. Reed-eating mites perhaps?

No, that's the common reedworm (arundophagus officinalis var kennygeei).

My reeds (about 15 in rotation) are always kept in one of those fancy hardshell cases with the plate of glass. Even then, I find if I have a period away from daily playing I need to toss some of the reeds.

Funny I have always found (slightly) broken reeds play the best.

Bill.

Try putting them in boiling hot water to soak. I've found that the reeds have a bit more life in them due to the pores opening up further. A double reed player gave me that one and it's worked for me.
