 Ill conductor

A conductor became ill before a concert one evening and the orchestra had to find an emergency substitute conductor immediately.

The only person in the orchestra with any conducting experience was the 2nd clarinet player. So, he bravely and meticulously conducted the concert and it was a tremendous success.

The regular conductor recovered and by the next night he was back on the podium. As the 2nd clarinetist took his seat in the orchestra, the 1st clarinet player turned to him and said, "So, where were you last night?"

If you conduct with superior skill,
It's not too wise to take ill.
The clarinetist fills in.
Sadly, much to your chagrin,
You'll be hunting for jobs in Brazil.

hahaha good stuff.

Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

One time a counductor stoped and asked the clarinet player if he was playing the solo on Bb clarinet and he said "ehe yes". "You should play it on A clarinet" said the conductor. The clarinet player was really nervous and said "yes" and bended down with the clarinet took the barell of and putted it on the Bb clarinet again and begin to play. The conductor said "Ah much better".

That's the same viola joke but it includes a back desk violist and a long tour.

One evening, a local band was amazed when one of their clarinetists--me, also a retired band director--filled in successfully for the missing bass drumist. Which further proves that as a clarinetist, it is good to be versatile. You never know................

BTW, bass drumming can be a lot of FUN--you get to set the tempo for all of the tunes (when the director wants to go too slow) and the good news, no pestky reeds, no tuning "issues" with the brass and no swabbing after.......prrrada-BOOM (chick)

I thought it was also funny back in 1947 when told to a group of us music camp kids by Leo Kopp, the opera conductor.

When he told to the band it was clarinets with the orchestra violas...of course that meant some of us heard it twice. But three times in almost 60 years...it doesn't get old!
