 Strathclyde Concerto #9

Was wondering if any of you have played the Strathclyde Concerto #9. It's for 6 wind soloists (piccolo, alto flute, English horn, Eb clarinet, bass clarinet, and contrabassoon) with string orchestra. The Eb part is especially wild, with a 17 bar cadenza going up to high A (concert high C), although thankfully not held on that note. Would appreciate suggestions on fingering that note. The over-blown E is not that good a high A on the Eefer, and I have been using a fingering of octave key,C#/ G# key and Eb/ Bb key plus Eb/Ab key x ooo C#/ Eb ooo Eb. This sort of works in the run leadinbg up to it as well. It probably just FEELS worse being alone on that passage and note!

I have a mini-score (definitely helps interpreting how you interact with the other wind soloists!) and the bass clarinet part doesn't look too bad. The pioccolo does have an equally challenging part, however. It is an interesting piece.

Anyway, any opinions/ comments are most welcome!

My favorite high A fingering on Eb clarinet is:

TR + G# throat key o o o + Eb side key / o o o F#/C#

Thanks! I tried t yesterday and it's a little steadier and closer to in tuine than the one I've been using. The good thing is that note is ALONE, so I don't have to worry about being in tune with let's say the piccolo! Wouldn't that be fun?

¿How difficult are the orchestra parts to this concerto? ¿Would it be playable by a mediocre orchestra whose string players hate modern music?

Elmo,

The string parts don't look too difficult in the mini score.Of course there are lots of 7/8 measures for everybody divided variously into 2+3+2 and all combos thereof.

As long as your six soloists were strong i think they could play this piece. It certainly is different. Apparently the 8 other Strathclyde concertos featured other principal chairs in the orchestra. This one covers all the "other" woodwinds in that section that normally aren't allowed to shiner. Since I wrote thkis first email I received a CD of a performance with the composer conducting and enjoyed it, although I'm wondering now about the audience's eaction.
