 Vandoren reed case
Author: columbus

I just tried to take the little tube in my reed case out and the stuff inside spilled everywhere. How should I clean the case? Does anyone know if the middle part where the reeds are can be taken out so there would be 3 seperate parts?

The little tube contains silica gel and can just be blown out with compressed air after it drys out completly. Unfortunately many people let the silica gel over-hydrate and it then acts as a humidifier rather than a drying agent. The little tubes are not as readily available as the cases and therefore most people do not change them routinely. There is only a small amount of the silica gel desiccant in the tube and it should be changed, depending on your in and out reed use, 4-5 times per year - Yeah right !!!

Would it hurt to just not use the tube?

As a reed holder the Vandoren case is a good case. The silica gel tube removes moisture when active but adds nothing to the reed holding aspect of the case.

The little tube is plastic that melts at the temperature needed to reactivate the silica gel. Some music stores carry replacement little silica gel tubes at about US $2.50 each or can order them from Dansr. You could make your own if you are handy.

I have spilled the contents of the Vandoren reed holders many times! If you take off the top part of the case and then pull the entire insides out of the other outside half, the tube will remain closed - it just sits on the inner piece, if that makes sense. Just never pull the descant out of the holder without completely pulling out the piece where the reeds sit on, too!

I have found, actually, that the simple Vito/LeBlanc plastic cases with the rubber band holding the reed in place work just as well, if not better. They are maybe $2.00 a piece. Keep your reeds in a semi-closed plastic bag and that will reduce warpage.
