Frank,
The key word is likely "balance." Even good reeds usually don't have the same degree of resistance from one side or the other. When those two imbalanced areas then vibrate out of sequence with one another it produces the squeaks. It then becomes our jobs as players to remove a tiny amount of cane from the "hard" or thicker side. Of course, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of opinions on exactly how to perform that job. Ridenour's ATG system, reed rush, a strip of sandpaper wrapped around a fingertip, reed knife, emory board, etc., etc, are all popular methods/equipment to balance our proverbial cane nightmare. Tom Ridenour addresses reed imbalance in his DVD that accompanies the ATG system, and he's even developed an easy test to determine the "thick" side of the reed. Good luck in getting your reeds balanced and....happy clarinet playing.
