 Flute - Clarinet Duet Help
Author: Detru Cofidin
Date:   2007-01-30 20:53

A friend of mine plays flute, and we're planning on doing a duet for our solo/ensemble contest.

I was wondering if there are any good duets out there that are fairly challenging, or perhaps with an accompanying piano, or at last resort, a woodwind trio, as those are more plentiful.

Any help would be appreciated.

We've just had a thread about this very topic. Search the archives.

The Rubank/Voxman "Seventy-Eight Duets for Flute and Clarinet" Vol. 1 and 2 (Rubank #196 and #197) have a number of interesting choices, many of which are on the NYSSMA competition list for flute/clarinet duets...GBK

Perhaps one the best original works composed for Flute and Clarinet is Choros, #2, written by H. Villa-Lobos in 1924. It is challenging and difficult, and it is original. While the transcriptions can be enjoyable to play or play through, this work is important because it is by a major 20th century composer, and of high quality. Your only problem may be the clarinet part, which is in A, and cannot be played on a Bb unless you have a low Eb key.
While it takes a lot of preparation, it is very gratifying to perform .
The work is full of characteristic rhythms, and includes a high d for the flute. It will be appreciated by any judges listening to your ensemble.

Muczynski also wrote a collection of fl. cl. duets. They are delightful, and more challenging than they first appear to be.

As you said fairly challlenging these suggestions are undoubtedly way to simple, but they are quite nice:

Take Your Partner and Waln Duets---I got these from
www.windmusicplus.com

My quartet has gotten some fun/easy/interesting music from
www.lastresortmusic.com

I've just ordered and received some arrangements from Last Resort Music Publishing (address above) for flute/clarinet. I plan to read through some of them this evening with a friend.

None of these may be contest caliber, but they are great to read through.
Remember, depending on the level of competition, it's not how tough the piece is that wins---it's how well you perform. Good luck...have fun.

Do you have a copy of Finale?
I'm proof-playing a wonderfull little duet in G-Major by Quantz that I've put down for flute and clarinet. It has some wonderful rythms and sounds great played allegro, or slower.

I'll send you the Finale file, and you can fiddle with it, print it and try it out on your computer.

Bob, indeed I do have a copy of Finale, and I do arrange duets for almost every instrument...besides flute, unfortunately. I would love to check out your duet! Just send it to the address in my profile, and I'll giver a try.

Thanks a bunch!
