No community band that I have heard of ,though I haven't really searched.
I couldn't find one on that list either.
I live in Natchitoches, LA if anyone has any information on bands in the area.

I actually tried out for the band at NSU and made it..but the scholarship they gave me was not worth the time I would have to spend in band practice. I really just wanted to do concert band, and you have to do both marching and concert at NSU :(
I think I will go speak with some of the NSU band people and see if there are any community bands in Alexandria or Natchitoches.
I really just wanted some suggestions on music books that would be useful to pick back up on playing so I dont' get rusty

I can't tell if you are serious or not LOL..But yeah..I am not too good at transcribing music ;p though I do love Nine Inch Nails.
But when I play my clarinet I generally like to play classics..Not much experience with modern music But I guess it's never to late to learn!
Sounds like a cool idea for someone more motivated than myself! Maybe I could give it a shot. ;p

I think there is actually a greater affinity between rock and classical musicians and music than between jazz and classical. A number of rock musicians were seriously classically trained before embarking on rock careers (although I can't think of any right now). Unlike most jazz that when played in classical style just sounds like badly played jazz, rock seems to take on a whole new character when disembodied from its familiar surroundings. Witness Christopher O'Reilly's (From the Top radio host) performances of Radio Head's material.

For the sake of continuity:
I recommended that sockmonkey transcribe or find in a fake book the NIN song that is (or was) playing on her myspace page and learn to play it. It's a slow rock ballad, enabling the practice of long tones, intonation, steady rhythm, etc. I suggested she find a friend who plays piano or guitar to accompany her, and perhaps learn of bunch of these types of tunes and then dress up in black and perform them at coffee houses. Any public performances, however, would always need to be in full accordance with the rules of copyright.
BTW, does the playing of the song on her page (by NIN, that is) violate copyright laws? And if so, then it's myspaces's responsiblity and liability, not sockmonkey's, correct?

I don't know if it violates copyright or not..Since I am not trying to sell it or anything I don't see the problem..I own the song on a CD I purchased and could link it myself to the page if it came down to it.. I know Myspace is being sued by some record labels..Oh well! All that copyright stuff is getting out of hand, and over my head If it really bothers you I'll take it off geeeez LOL.

...without going into too much detail - the purchase of a CD entitles you to listen to it and to hum a tune under the shower. You may even play the CD when you have friends for dinner, or you can put it (don't!) into your microwave if you think that Kenny G sucks. But that basically is it. Everything beyond (ie making the piece, in whatever form, available to an audience of unknown size) needs the blessing of the copyright owner (not the author but the one who has the right to publish) if you want to stay out of trouble.
If you want to record something for myspace it might be a good idea to mail the flick to the company in question and ask for permission. If you have no financial interest in publishing your recordings, you just might get a nod (plus ten free pages of fine print).
Side question to the lawyers in here - a "copyright primer" for all us clueless musicians would be a nice addition for the Keepers. (Just the "common sense" stuff that is the same in each country)

Thanks for the "copyright infringement for dummies" run down LOL! The only copyright I am even vaguely familiar with is that pertaining to images because in my Graphic Design degree that is mainly what we work with. I think the copyright infringement going on with pictures and images on the internet is just as bad as the music infringemens.
Myspace puts the music up for people to link to their page..I just assumed it was OK to use it..Hmmm. Anybody with a Myspace page can just go to the "Myspace music" section..Click..you can add your favorite song! *shakes finger at Myspace* Naughty naughty Myspace!

This is directly from the Myspace FAQ..So why would it be my fault that they allow users to add music to their page?
How do I add a song from a Myspace artist to my profile? How do I remove it?
Adding a song is easy. Visit Myspace Music (http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music) and find a song you want to add. If the artist has given permission to share the music, you'll see an "Add" link next to the song. Click "Add" and the song will play on your profile! Only one song can be added to your profile at one time.
If you want to change songs, simply find another song and click "Add."
To remove the song, go to Home >> Edit Profile >> Profile Songs and click "Delete."

I didn't go to your MySpace page; I incorrectly thought you had uploaded your own music to your MySpace page.
MySpace is free to make arrangements with the owners of songs so that you can link to them; they're paying for the privilege, not you.
