 Looking for 'Vibra-string' ligature
Author: magrkira
Date:   2007-01-26 17:49

Hello,

My teacher unearthed a ligature that he bought about 20 years ago. He thinks it's called a 'vibra-string'. Basically it has nylon strings held tight by plastic pieces and a screw at each end (a string ligature with screws). Anyways, I REALLY liked it, and I'm trying to find one. Anyone have any info?

:)
Thanks,

Kira

Hi Kira - Searching for US patents on ligatures is quite a task, there are so many ! Do you have any more info re: name of maker, inventor etc or additional description of its structure and operation? Making brief searches on www.USPTO/databases and www.Google.com/patents turned up an interesting couple of pats and their references-cited. They are 6,118,060 [citing 3,618,440 and 5,623,118{?}] and 5,289,753 [citing 6.020,545 and 4,669,352]. You might take a look at these and let us know. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

It's the Viba-String, without the "r." See http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=68353&t=68330.

I made www.Google.com/patent searches via 'string ligature clarinet' [and saxophone, same retrieval !] and believe 5,648,623 [1995] is what you are looking for, but several others may be of interest. Silverstein and Heinrich are the inventors. Giokas had an earlier string lig. Luck, Don

Hi Kira, I have a plastic/string lig in my collection. It does not have any make on it but it perhaps is what you are looking for. The strings are in plastic grooves. Unfortunately the strings tend to wander away from the grooves when off the mouthpiece.....so there is a bit of fussing to get it all together. Perhaps the strings can be glued down? In any case you are welcome to this ligature free of charge. I have way too much equipment. Just email me your address and I'll send it along. All the best. John

I'm not at home right now (so I can't be sure) but I think I have one of these somewhere... If I remember right, the name of the company on the mpc cap was "Sounds of Woodwinds".

I use the Pyne string ligature. They're very nice.

The problem with nylon is that it 'creeps' (continues to stretch permanently) under sustained load -- so if you were to use such a ligature regularly, or keep it tightened for long periods of time, it would fairly soon become unusable, I think. There are better materials available nowadays for such an application.

That connection to Sound of Woodwinds may be right. As I remember, that may be the company that either made or distributed these. I remember these ligatures. They were sort of a hybrid of a plastic screw type- and string combination.
