I'm traveling to the Seattle area this weekend for a tour with my college band, and I'm concerned about the climate change (I'm coming from Minnesota). I haven't oiled my clarinet yet this year; should I do that before I leave to prevent cracking? Any advice on how to handle problems with reeds? Thanks.

The humidity here in sunny Seattle (high of 50 degrees F today) is not a significant factor for wood instruments. If anything, it will be better for your instrument than the dry humidity in Minnesota. Make sure you have cork grease just in case. Right now in my house the humidity is around 48 percent. Are you playing outside?

Same goes for reeds, if anything your reed will stay wetter longer and warp less. We have new people in our community band from upstate New York. They had no problems what so ever. And they even said that they couldn't believe how polite Seattlites are. :o)

IF your instrument and yourself for that matter can tolerate the harsh weather in minnesota, it should do fine in seattle.....

Agree with above comments. Your instrument will love the trip!
(I moved from Edmonton, dry-cold place to Vancouver, warm-wet)

The joint cork may/may not swell, so don't forget the good cork grease.

Also, if you travel by air, don't check-in the instruments unless you know they are well taken care for. (i.e., no extreme temperature change, etc)
