[pulling out the manuscript Mr. Strahan sent me]
Derek Strahan's Cocnerto is quite long. It was written in 2002 for Alan Vivian. The first movement is 12 pages long and has parts of it up in the rafters hovering for extended periods of time in 12/8 time at dotted quarter equals 120. It is very jazz and swing influenced. It has a cadenza that is difficult at best.
The second movement is another twelve pages and is slower, but still in 12/8. It's much more clarinet-like in composition but is still quite difficult. It ends in Ab.
The third movement is just a short six pages in length (bringing the total to 30) and is very melodic. While melodic, it is also quite chromatic and the key is a dismal Db major. It really does move and has a lot of jazz influence.
Overall, it's hard to describe the piece. It doesn't have the un-melodiousness of Corigliano but isn't really melodic like the Copland.
