I've enjoyed perusing this site. Lots of expertise. I have owned a Henri Dubois Bb Bass Clarinet for about 2 years and wonder what information might be shared about the horn. It plays well, is in good condition but the case should be replaced. I suspect the case is the origional so I'll work on it also.
The mouthpiece is a Penzel-Meuller (I think). The instrument is wooden.
I omitted the serial: #257

Hi challey - Since no one has responded to your inquiry, I made a quick SEARCH in our archives and found some references to Dubois. From a brief look, it appears that Dave Spieg. et al identify "his" wood, silver etc clarinets as having been made by Malerne, probably for "stencilling" and sale in the US, perhaps elsewhere, prob. in the mid 1900s. I suggest that you make a Search via Henri Dubois and read what we discussed earlier. Luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

If you can post a few photos, that would help us identify the instrument (especially showing the register mechanism on the bottom side of the upper joint).

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get one of my friends with a digicam and try to get some shots posted. Will take a few days. The Malerne conncection is really interesting - "All things to all people!"

Also, check an earlier thread here called "Unknown Bass" -- in which some photos of Malerne-stencil bass clarinets are posted. If they look just like yours, then you'll know what you've got!
