As a novice researcher in the field of TESOL(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), I found the following similarities between conducting a research(R) and playing the clarinet (C).

 1.[R] Read a lot: i.e. literature review
[C] Listen to CDs a lot

 2. [R] Go to presentations, conferences a lot to learn.
[C] Go to concerts a lot to learn.

 3. [R] THINK A LOT (to figure out how to make good research questions, etc)
[C] THINK A LOT (to figure out how to interpret a piece, etc)

 4. You need intrinsic motivation to go on.

 5. You need/spend money, not earn it. You can solicit others to pay,of course...^^

 6. It can be extremely FUN but also a source of big headache...

Any comment/ addition to the list ?

Well put, LLJ, YES, great similarity IMHO. Having spent 40+ years in Chem Engr, Automatic Control and Patent work, many of the self-learning techniques translate directly to music performance and instrument improvement, the latter being my retirement hobby. Will be interested in other's thots and opinions. Don

 Thanx, Mark, Don

You can't do research overnight. You have to keep at it for a long time to learn what there is to know and fill in all the gaps.

You also can't learn to play clarinet overnight. It takes a long time and persistent effort to become good at it.

(being an amateur clarinettist and doing a PhD in physics)

 - both are a very competitive environment

 - both are done best in a group

 - both are creative activities

 - both always require more of your time
