Now that applications are finally in and audition dates are being arranged, where is everyone applying, and has anyone already auditioned?

Ohio University - February 19
Bowling Green State University - February 24
Kent State University - March 3
Capital University - March 17

The only one I'm really worried about is Capital University, hence why I scheduled it the latest. I've met with Dr. Rischin at OU and she really enjoys my playing, so I'm not terribly concerned with that one. BGSU and Kent should be easy to get into. It's all going to come down to scholarships. I'm going to be competing for a possible full tuition scholarship for Capital on February 7, so if I can get that and somehow make it into their music conservatory, I'll be finding a few dieties to thank. Good luck to everyone on their auditions.

West Chester- Feb. 30
Moravian College- Feb. 9
Ithaca College- Feb. 17
Messiah College- March 3

One thing that is bothering me- what solo should I do first-the lyrical or the technical one? Im good at the lyrical one (rose #11), but not so good at the technical one (rose #2). My first instinct says to play #11 first, but I dont want them to cut the audition short before I can get to it......STRESS...

columbus-

When I auditioned, the professor told me to start with whichever piece I could play the best and was most comfortable with. With the Rose 2, just practice it really slowly and work up speed. It's one of those Rose etudes that after you work it out slowly, once you play it fast, it's pretty easy to do.

James --

Good luck at Capital! That's my alma mater.

Do you mean to say that these days Capital is more competitive for clarinetists than Ohio U? I thought OU had quite a clarinet program . . .

I'm not terribly firmiliar with Capital, I just know that they have a good music program. The only reason I'm not too worried about OU is because I got to play for Dr. Rischin when I went down there to check out the campus/visit my brother, and since then she's periodically been contacting me just to see if I have any questions for her. She actually called me three times in one day just to make sure that I knew who to contact to schedule my audition. I know I'm still going to have to play well to get in, but it's just going to be less stressfull for me to play for at least one person who I'm already somewhat firmiliar with.

You have two pieces - but what I've heard with three pieces is to play the moderately good one first, the worst one next, and the best one last. You leave them with your best work.

Of course you'll have to be able to forgive yourself for goofing on the worst one so that you'll have confidence in your best piece - as long as you're not overconfident and allow the music to run away from you.

Texas Tech - Feb 24 (my number one choice)
University of North Texas - Mar 3

I'm playing the third movement from Weber's Concerto No. 1 and #16 in the 32 Etudes section from the rose book for both of my auditions. UNT is my "back up" school but they require minor scales for the audition so I'm cramming to learn them.

Good luck to everyone!!

Seriously not a plug for my school, buuuut,

Apply to LSU!!!!! You are still able to apply!
We have a wonderful school of music with one of the top 10 opera programs in the country, great band department, and fine intructors (Dr. Justin O'Dell is the clr. professor). Plus, the school is really good about scholarships!
Just a thought!

TBD.

But after long years of debate, I've decided that when I transfer to a duty station near a music school, I'll apply for a music performance degree. Looking forward to it!

Fort Bragg is only a 10min drive from Methodist College. Dr. Blanton is amazing on clarinet. Give them a look.

I don't know that I'd be saying stuff like that...BGSU is a fine school and Kevin Schempf is an excellent teacher and performer...the clarinet dept. there has a growing good reputation and you really don't know who is applying!

Hm I'm pretty new to this board, I've just been reading posts for awhile, but i figured since this applies to me, might as well reply.

I've already auditioned at Indiana University and Michigan State University, and was very impressed. Still to come I have University of Michigan, Feb. 16, Northwestern University, Feb. 23, and Eastman, Mar. 2...should be fun, gotta love audition time :)
