 Korean translation of the Clarinet?
Author: claclaws

While waiting for the reply from the International clarinet association about this proposal of mine, which consists of asking permission to translate some of the articles of the Clarinet magazine, I'd like to ask bboarders the same question:

Can I go ahead with the translation and post them on two web bboards in Korea?

The reason for doing that (when NOBODY asks me to do^^) is that due to lack of clarinet-related resources, I believe many Korean amateur (and probably pro) clarinetists may have thirst for such valuable information offered by the CLarinet magazine.

Please tell me what you think. Plus, do you have a lot of resources (i,e, books, magazines, self-help guide books etc, not the score books like Klose or Langenus and the like) in YOUR country?

No you can't - it's not legal and puts your site at risk.

In many cases even the I.C.A. can't give you permission because the I.C.A. does not always ask for the copyright to be assigned to them. For those articles (many if not most of them) you'll need permission from both the I.C.A. and the article author.

The many problems with all the releases keeps articles from being displayed on the I.C.A. web site.

Big sigh, but thank you very much, Mark. You're so knowledgeable about those copyright issues.

How about the contents page? Am I not even allowed to type and translate the list?

would it still be a problem if it were a summary of the articles without exact 'quotes'?

Summaries are fine ... but they would have to be just that - summaries, not a rewrite of the article ("plagiarism").

I checked out http://www.clarinet.org/anthology/ this morning.
So are these articles copyright free?

No. The copyright remains (usually) with the original authors. They appear to have permitted the site to publish the article in electronic form, but that doesn't change the ownership.
(in a nutshell: just because something is available online doesn't mean it is "public domain" in any form, unless a header paragraph in the article says so. When in doubt, it's copyrighted and all you are allowed to do is to publish a link to the site where a "product" (article, music, painting, whatever) is appearing.)

If you want to translate these articles, you still need the blessings of the authors (or whoever holds the usage rights).

I always thought its okay as long as you address the fact that It was the Author who wrote the article, and not you.
