 Buffet thumb rest
Author: DAVE

A student of mine has stripped the little hoop that fastens into the adjustable thumb rest on his E11. Where can a replacement thumb rest be found? I have checked a few sites but cannot find one...

best call ww&bw - this item shows 'on order' and they've had trouble with back ordered items lately

Most repair shops will be able to fix that problem and/or have spare parts.

Any BCUSA dealer should be able to order the part for you. WW is going through their bankruptcy proceedings so don't expect great things with backordered items until they get out from under and their suppliers have established new business terms.

This thumbrest is a bad design, and cast in very soft metal so the likelyhood of the thread stripping is high.

The rails on which the thumbrest runs is also a week point and if overtightened, either the thread will strip (as the threaded part is too short) or the rails will break.

Definitely not one of their better ideas.

fwiw, when one my students has one break, which is common, i replace it with a non-adjustable thumb rest. thats a job best left to a tech, as it requires drilling into the wood.

The original fixed metal ones and fixed plastic ones that they once had were much better.

I am using these; they're cheap, sturdy and work fine.

That's the same as the Yamaha one.

My personal experience similar as above...the E11 adj. t.r. is junk. Poor design and poor material. Replace with something else

Does the Yamaha one fit the screw holes that are on the E11?

The cheap copy from 1stopclarinet has the hole centers exactly 10.5mm (0.41") apart (measured the straight distance, not along the curve)

No good for this application.

Ooh, and I was going to suggest duct tape!

(that's probably how one of my relatives would do it. Except that said relative considers band-aid even superior to duct tape. Arrgh)
