As a novice researcher in the field of TESOL(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), I found the following similarities between conducting a research(R) and playing the clarinet (C).
1.[R] Read a lot: i.e. literature review
[C] Listen to CDs a lot
2. [R] Go to presentations, conferences a lot to learn.
[C] Go to concerts a lot to learn.
3. [R] THINK A LOT (to figure out how to make good research questions, etc)
[C] THINK A LOT (to figure out how to interpret a piece, etc)
4. You need intrinsic motivation to go on.
5. You need/spend money, not earn it. You can solicit others to pay,of course...^^
6. It can be extremely FUN but also a source of big headache...
Any comment/ addition to the list ?
