(Im not 100% sure if this has been covered before...i didnt find it if it has, but if it has a moderator can feel free to delete it)
A couple of weeks ago my private teacher started me on the Saint-Saens sonata for clarinet and piano. I ordered it from a local music store but the only edition they had was very obscure publisher and had a lot of publisher editing. So now im wondering...what is the 'best' (and by best im asking for personal opinions) publisher is for this piece.
thanks in advance

My edition is by the French publisher Durand. No editor is mentioned, so I've always assumed it is fairly accurate.

There's an accidental missing early on in the 2nd movement if I remember correctly as I haven't played it for about 15 years (the Ebs in one bar should be changed to E naturals - so it's E-F-E-F-G and not Eb-F-Eb-F-G) - the same sequence is repeated later on in the next page of that movement, but with the right notes.
Or compare it with the piano part when you get it as that's got the right notes.

Ok thank you all...Durand was the publisher I was looking into buying.
Also, any opinions on editions of Messager's 'Solo de Concours'?

For the Messager I like Bonade's edition, in his "16 Grand Solos de Concert" collection, published by Southern. It also has, for my money, the best edition of the Weber "Concertino", and solos by Widor, Marty, d'Olone, Pierne etc.
If you purchase it, don't let the dealer try to charge you separately for the piano accompaniment book (as a local music store did to one of my students). Both books are included in the cover price.

The best version I have seen of the Saint-Saens is in the book "The French Influence" edited by Georgina Dobre. Has a few other standards in it as well;
Saint-Saens Sonata
Debussy Petite Piece
Debussy Premiere Rhapsody
Lefevre Sonata No. 12
Great book!
