Well I'm in the search for private teachers in my area before my next 3 auditions. I have narrowed the search down to three people. Two of them are middle school band directors who are known to give lessons on clarinet. My director's daughter took lesson's with one of them and made All State last year, she has now graduated. The third one is a clarinet instructor at Methodist College here in Fayetteville. He is the principal clarinetist in our local symphonic orchestra. Would he be a better bet to choose over the two middle school teachers who are mediocre at clarinet compared to the instructor at the college?

I would go for the college/ orchestral teacher. Although being a better player doesn't necessarily mean you can teach.

Some hopefully heplful background.
My teacher is the principal clarinetist in a symphony. He has amazing insights. He can tell me what I'm doing wrong without my even knowing that I am doing something wrong.
He has thought out and practiced and perfected things that trouble me. He gives me proven solutions to my problems.
He as an impecable sence of aesthetics and can work down to the finest sublties.
Pick the candidate that can do this sort of thing for you.

It looks like your in the Raleigh, NC area; is that right? If so, I'd highly recommend Arturo Ciompi, who lives near Duke. His number is (919) 286-1871
I worked with him when I was younger, and think he's by far the best in the triangle area; not just for his abilities as a player, but his great personality and dedication as a teacher. Arturo played with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in NYC when they were getting started, as well as a lot of other top groups in NYC before moving back to NC. A terrific player, wonderful teacher, and a great person, too! You won't find anyone better in the area.

Actually I'm in Hope Mills(outside of Fayetteville) right of I-95 so I'm a 2 hour drive or so from certain areas of the Triangle. I want someone more close to home here because I'm still too young to drive up there because I don't have a license and it's a big hassle to have my parents drive me up there. I think I might go with Dr. Blanton at Methodist College if anyone's ever heard of him.
