Hi! I'm taking a roadtrip tomorrow to WW&BW to try out new mouthpieces. I was just wondering if anyone exercises that were good for testing a mouthpiece for tone, articulation, sonority, power and so on. My teacher recommended scales, 12ths, octaves and so on.. I'm looking for something a bit more specific.. Kind of interesting thread to start anyways! It's a bit late, but I'm hoping to catch some west coast clarinets players checking the site before bed.
I look forward to all your advice!

Hello Dale,
After the many things that your teacher has suggested: Bring two passages that you are very familiar with, a lyrical/dynamic and a technical/articulated.
Play through and note the differences between what you are trying and what you know: Where does the mouthpiece allow you to do more, and where it is a bit confining.
Trust your gut! (and bring along another pair of ears!)
James
PS...bring your tuner.
