Hello--our teacher is showing us all the cool stuff here on the clarinet forum. Please send us advice for young players. We are at our weekly sectional rehearsal--we are 7th and 8th graders.

Thank you!

Listen to recordings by clarinet players. Youtube is a good source if a computer with a fast intenet connection is available to you. When you find one or more that you like, try to emulate their sound. Then practice, practice, practice!

Sounds like you guys have a good thing going on. Congrats !! Listen to recordings. Try to get the Morales french album and the Bonade album. They are a little advanced for 7 and 8 grade but you can still learn a lot from them. Listen to the way these guys sound and try to imitate their sound. Check out the Weiner catalogue. They have a lot of clarinet CDs. Try Harold Wright. He is great. And try to get the Piet Jaggers Clarinet Choir vol 2. Good Luck !!! Practice and listen.

Remember every moment that it´s music you´re playing, not just notes. Notes are really important but technique is only the construction material you need in order to build a musical monument. Love gives your structure its colors and appeal! When you´re not playing, sing. Love the music!

Oh, and Smart Music makes it a lot more fun to practice at home So does practicing together with another player.

Just a brief couple of thoughts.

Don't spend sectional time on the computer!!

But seriously, practice WHENEVER YOU CAN. Don't be like I was in high school, cruising on natural talent. Sooner or later, you'll have to put in those hours, no matter how "good" you think you are. I'm paying for it now in college, having to work twice as hard to do some catch-up work that would have been taken care of if I'd practiced more dilligently in high school.

But, always have fun and love to play.

Let music be your best friend.

Sometimes it may not seem cool to be a band geek, or whatever, but if you really love playing, don't let anybody talk you out of it.

It's something that will always "be there" for you in your life, when you are happy, when you are sad, when you are lonely. It will help you make the right kind of friends, and it will help you stay away from the wrong kind.

Susan

Just a spelling fix: Piet Jeegers (his site: http://home.hetnet.nl/~pj-clarinetchoir/index_en.htm)

There's two other great Dutch choir CD's out there (a bit more funky and jazzy):
Netherlands Clarinet Choir - Paradigma
Netherlands Clarinet Choir - Take A Break

"It will help you make the right kind of friends, and it will help you stay away from the wrong kind. "

Unless you start hanging out with those jazz kids....

Kidding!
