I have always said that it takes more work to field a college marching band than a football team. Years of practice, private lessons for many and a show every week that demands precision of execution from ALL members on every "play". And the physical demands of marching and playing wind and percussion instruments at the same time--put three hundred linemen on the band field and see how long they can take it!!!

My hats off to the Gator Band from a proud member of the Wisconsin Alumni Marching Band, 300+ from ages "just graduated" to 60yrs who can still do the run-on from the team tunnel at warp cadence. How many alumn varisty linebackers could do that at 50+??

I'm very pleased that TV is allowing at least some coverage of the marching bands' performances to hit the airwaves. A whole lot of people have done a whole lot of work to put on the half time shows. To me, Janet Jackson's breast isn't nearly as exciting as Ohio State's Sousaphone player dotting the i .

I'd guess you are older than me!. Seen ONE Sousaphone, seen them all.

Well, the rest of that halftime show up until then was so dull that neither my husband or my sons were tuned in at all when that happened. They'd all rather watch the marching band

The big game is on right now this very second. The Ohio State sousaphone player is just about to dot the "I". Have to admit, what a show Script Ohio is!

It was a good game, but not as good as last year's Rose Bowl with USC and TEXAS!! Go horns!

I'm glad they didn't override all the half time show with Tostitos advertising.

The traditional script Ohio is always a highlight of every Ohio football game and the Ohio State Band always performs it with precision and class regardless of time of year or weather conditions. Maybe if their football team had practiced more with the band.............:>}

The only problem with the Ohio State Marching Band is that it's all brass and percussion - no woodwinds!

It must have taken extra band members to form the S. Or maybe the football tean suited up "one more time"................

As a past member of the Florida marching band (75-79), I was thrilled to see the marching gators.

In fact I was almost as thrilled as when I played in my first rehersal as a freshman for the Gator marching band...auditions were over...some folks didnt even make the cut...so I was sitting in the second row back and our first number was the fight song..."One and two and" came from our director, Frank Wicks, then BAM! I was almost blown out of my chair. Having the full compliment of bones behind me and 200+ being crammed into the small band room certainly added to getting blown away. Coming from a high school band to this was more than a step up! I immediately stopped playing while the band blew on. I looked up and the director was smiling right at me (somehow I sensed that this happens each year).

Anyhow, the marching band was physical and took a great deal of work. Great memories!

dhertig--I know the feeling. I came from a small high school band of about fifty members (and not that "good") to my first rehearsal with the Wisconsin Marching Band (1959) and was "blown away" at the first rehearsal about the same as you. And the best part--on Jan 1, 1960, as a freshman clarinetist, I was marching in the front row of that band down Colorado Blvd in Pasadena, CA to the Rose Bowl. Wasn't college the most fun, sometimes.............

(btw, during the five mile trek, we played "On Wisconsin" almost fifty times--and is spite of that and 46 yrs of frequent repetions, I still love that tune)
