Does anyone know of a recording of the Concertino by Tartini (arr Gordon Jacob)?
Although the tempo markings are all pretty straight forward, and the style of the piece is quite elegant and Mozartian, I just wanted to be sure about the tempo of the 2nd mvt (Allegro Molto (in 3)) and the last mvt (in 2 Allegro Risoluto)
Does anyone have any experience of performing this piece? any advice or thoughts would be very welcolme....I'm to play it this sunday!

I played this with chamber strings some years ago. My pencilled tempo markings were....
I.... quaver =70, segue
II....crotchet =195
III...quaver = 60, small bridge cadenza then
IV....crotchet= 60.
I wrote and played a little cadenza bridge between III and IV, (starting on the last F# minim pause of III) From memory this worked very well. My markings also suggest that whole piece is about 12-13 mins long, but this may be a bit conservative.
I have to say I really enjoyed playing it (twice that weekend). It's a lovely lyrical piece of a genre that clarinetists don't often get to play. It's not too difficult as it sits very well below the fingers thanks to Gordon Jacobs. If your accompanist can match your slow movement rubato it should work out really nicely.
A humble suggestion would be to guard against racing away on the last movement as the triplets give enough urgency to the tempo. The only altissimo work is in the last few bars, so don't tighten up !

Bob - Thanks for that it really does help.
I agree with you about the difference in genre that it gives, the baroque style and crispness of it is very unusual for the Clarinet.
I do know the piece well (myself) but have never heard another interpretation of it so it is very interesting to hear of someone else views on it.
Just one question though,
did you really mean Quaver=60 for III Mvt(Adagio)
& Crotchet=60 for the IV mvt (Allegro risoluto)?
As both of these strike me as a little slow?

Humble apologies and well spotted.
For 60 read 80. Lesson learnt. Look at faint speed markings with correct specs and don't profer advice hurriedly before going off to a late rehearsal.
I trust it didn't throw you into a (slow) spin.
