 Backun Seconds

I'm interested in trying some Backun barrels after recently having a quick hoot on a colleagues' and being impressed. I'm wanting to hear from anybody who has seen and tried the second barrels. Can you tell me were the defects obvious and if there were any minor cracks are they likely to cause a problem down the track?

I purchased a "second" bell from Morrie about a year ago. I asked him to send me 3 of whatever he thought would work best with my Opus II. Julian Bliss was in his shop and they selected 2 firsts and 1 second and shipped them out to me overnight. Morrie told me he thought the second might end up being my choice ($150.00 less, so it didn't benefit him much to recommend it) because it sounded great on the Opus II they had in their studio. They were all three beautiful, but the ring on the top of the second had a "joint" on the top where it had been redone in their shop. It is a beautiful bell and I did end up purchasing it because it had far and away the best sound for me. I would not hesitate to buy a second barrel from him. I was delighted to save a few bucks.

I have a Backun second cocobolo ringed barrel, and the "defect" was a swirl in the grain pattern that they thought wouldn't be appealing to the masses. No cracks, no checks, no chips, just an odd grain pattern.

Works for me! I happen to find it quite beautiful...and of course, it plays like a dream.

Thanks guys, that's good to hear. I think I'll go ahead with trying some of the barrels...eventually.

I sent an email (when I contacted them several months ago) and they replied (both Morrie and Joel) with the phone number asking me to call to better answer my questions. I called and they answered right away. I would think perhaps the holiday is the reason for a delay. Call again.
