Hello -- Just moved to NYC and am interested in finding out about local professional or semi-professional clarinetists who play for fun; I would be interested in attending. Does anyone know if the clarinet teachers at Juillard or elsewhere have free performances or perform anywhere on a regular basis? Does anyone know about any forums in NYC or adveristing venues where people such as myself could find out about these opportunities to hear these performances? Thanks!

I can't speak from personal experience, as I live in Detroit area, but my sister lives there, and her daughter attends the Fiorrella (sp?) LaGuardia Performaing Arts HS, next door to Juilliard. You may remember this school, as the movie and TV show "Fame" were based on this school. I am sure you could bop up to tJuilliard and find out about their performance schedules, or simply call them and explain about what you are looking for. While there, you could also look into the LaGuardia performances. I understand they are unbelievable.

Although I moved from there, welcome to the Big Apple.
There are numerous BB members who, living/working, in NYC or the immediate area that hopefully will respond.
All I can offer is that you phonce the local schools....Julliard, Mannes, Manhattan, High School of Music and Art, etc. and inquire about student recitals and performances. Often, performances are posted on the bulletin boards of the Music depts.
Also, try contacting Kristin at Roberto's Woodwinds. She is a respected clarinet repair tech and player. She's been in NYC for about 4 yrs, transplanted from the West coast.
Perhaps notices of upcoming peformances are posted at Music stores such as Manny's.

Juilliard's orchestra and ensembles perform regularly at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Concerts are either free or cheap. Check the website.
There are many community and semi-professional orchestras in NYC, most with websites that list performance schedules. They usually play in churches, sometimes at concert halls. Here's a partial list off the top of my head (you'll have to do the googling):
New York Repertory Orchestra (NYRO)
Musica Bella
Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra (there's also a professional Brooklyn Philharmonic)
Park Avenue Chamber Symphony
Lawyers Orchestra
College of Science and Math Orchestra (Cosmo)
Riverside Symphony
Astoria Symphony
If you like opera, there's "Opera on Tap," made up of trained singers and an ad hoc orchestra that plays in bars around town.
Also, other music schools have lots of performances:
Mannes
Manhattan School of Music
Brooklyn College
Columbia University Orchestra

Good luck!!!! Even out here in the mid-west ("sticks" to NYers) I don't know of any professional musicians who play for fun. If there is an opportunity for personal publicity or a paycheck at the end of the gig, they don't show up. They just prefer to sit home and do nothing rather than go out to a community venue and have fun playing music with others. And I think that is sad...............
I know that making money defines being a "professional" and taking care of finacial responsibilities are important, but shouldn't playing your instrument always remain "fun" and something you like doing--even if for free???
OK, Pro's, what do you say????

Jeff mentioned his niece's high school: Fiorello LaGuardia HS for the Performing Arts. It's located west of Lincoln Center at 65th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
You could check out its website for professional level high school music and dance performances: <www.laguardiahs.org>
They recently finished performances of the musical, Ragtime. I didn't go, but I understand the performances were unbelievably fantastic.
You might also be interested to know that Stanley Drucker attended this High School (at the time, it was known as the High School of Music and Arts).
