 Soft reeds in winter??
Author: kev182

I'm going crazy... It feels like I'm playing on tissue paper. All my reeds are soft to the point I have to clip them twice. I have never had this problem before. People tell me this happens to everyone during winter. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes.
And it's not just the eggnog.
Just keep having half a size stronger around.

Well, it may be a problem with your RC. Try an R13 and see how you feel.

I also need harder reeds in the winter and softer reeds in the summer. Usually I don't need a size harder because reeds in the same box vary in strength (I think it is a good thing) and always I find at least a few that fit the weather.

The weather in a mouthpiece is fairly consistent: warm and humid :-)
Maybe your embouchure is getting stronger?

Unfortunately the vamp of the reed is exposed to dry and cold so keep the mouthpiece constantly in your mouth. Good luck with this!

could be getting stronger but I doubt it...It's very frustrating being in the middle of two reed sizes... 4's too hard 3 1/2 too soft... My guess is that I want more resistence in my setup... I guess i can try a shorter facing mouthpiece or just wait and hope for warmer weather =D

Strange... my reeds tend to get more stuffy and feel harder in the winter. This could be due to the fact that winters in calgary are actually dryer than the summer by a significant margin.

If not, then I'm just losing my mind... perhaps egg nog makes reeds seem harder.

I think I agree with Sean. High altitude as well as winter conditions require looking for lighter and more vibrant reeds. This is the opposite of what Kevin is experiencing.
