I have recently purchased a Yamaha CS A clarinet, in which I was inititially happy with.

Recently, there is a "buzzing sound" coming from the lower joint. Does anyone know what this could be?

I appreciate any feedback. Even if you tell me, I bought a crappy clarinet. :-) It was $600. It's a trial "A" clarinet.. I most definitely plan on buying a Buffet "A" in time.

Thanks!

Are the ends of the LH levers covered with skin where they join the E/B and F#/C# keys?

What condition are the pads in - are any torn or is the skin loose (which can cause a kazoo-like buzz on certain notes)?

Are all the screws well oiled?

Are the pads seating well?

Check the regulation of the F/C key with the E/B key - are both keys closing together when you play low E, or is the F/C key not closing (ie. slightly lighter when tested with a very thin cigarette paper) with the E/B key?

Is the spring tension on the closed keys (B/F# 'sliver' key, Ab/Eb and F#/C# keys) too light causing them not to close properly, or blow open when played loudly?

 Good advice from Chris here...

as to your clarinet....why are you not happy with the clarinet??? Is it because of intonation or tone or is it mainly because the adjustment is wrong???

I would to your teacher and ask him/her to check the instrument and help assess some of the issues you are having. Remember a spring that is loose can also cause alot of sound or added ringing...

If it's a buzz it's probably mechanical. Check all your screws, posts & linkages. Could be a pad as well. You more than likely did not buy a crappy clarinet. It's certainly not crap just because it's not a "Buffet"!

If you plan to purchase a Buffet without looking at other brands you are making a mistake. I have a pair of Yamaha SE-Vs that I really like. Actually the longer I own them the more I like them. I purchased my original SE-V both because of it's sound/tuning as well as the fact that its quality was so much higher than that of the R13s I tried. I didn't like the Selmers or Leblancs I tried. It took a while to get my hands acclimated to the slightly different keywork but I think it was worth the wait. As it happens, the A clarinet is an incredible instrument with a beautiful sound. I purchased it separately from WW/BW as an A-stock instrument. I love it.

My point - don't buy into the Buffet brand ("mafia") until you really know that it is right for you. Try them all. That's where the fun is!

$600 for a Yamaha CS A clarinet is a steal, and at that price I reckon you ought to have it fully serviced as you haven't lost out there.

I play a pair of Yamahas - an SEV b flat and a CS A. They are both superb instruments - as good as anything else I have ever played (including all the Buffet models except the Elite). I remember my teacher saying to me when I brought my SEV bflat to him for the first time that it made his instrument look like rubbish (well..not quite th e word he used!!).
I think that John Bruce Yeh of the CSO at one stage used this combination. Yamaha have long made superb A's and their b flats have proven to be as good as any on the market if you have a good one. I suggest that you have the instrument ( which is a bargain!!) serviced and set up for you with a good mouthpiece and barrel combination.

Disclaimer: I have not tried the Backun clarinets......
