 New double case
Author: theconcertino

Hey everyone, I'm interested in purchasing a double case, but needed help deciding on which case to buy. Right now, I'm deciding between the Buffet Pouchette case with the Olathe case cover, the Bam Trekking Case, and an Altieri Case cover for my current case. I'm looking for a somewhat small and light case that can store alot of supplies, and can be easily stored in a college music locker. Just wondering what your opinions are of these listed, or if you have any other cases to suggest....

Thanks!

Take a look at the Marcus Bonna cases. They're very popular with horn and basson players, too.

Interesting idea of the marcus bonna cases

i like how it's so space efficient, and that they made no waste of just having the "bare essentials" as well as spaces and outside pockets. i think it could very well take alot of accessory stuffing.

I have a Marcus Bonna case - just got it about a month ago and think that it is IMO the best case on the market (of course I have not tried every one so the universe is limited to the ones that I have - Buffet, ProTek,Bam)

The case is smaller than the rest, well made, has a large enough inside storage area for reeds and extra junk and an outside large pocket for accessories. It also has a dedicated zippered music section area. The inside is configurable for many sized instruments with movable partitions and movable cushioning for each instrument. All parts are disassembled as carried which I like too. It has two handles, detachable back pack straps and/or shoulder strap.

The downside is that availability is limited, production is limited, and it is more expensive than the others mentioned. I'll be taking it on an international trip soon so I will see how the rigors affect my current thoughts.

Just looked at the site. The clarinet case looks goos and fairly sturdy. How much was the price as the site did not say? Also the picture showed compartments for three barrels, I have four, do you think that four will fit along side the mouthpieces etc.

Does anyone have any experience with the Howarth double case that daviecane sells? From the pictures, it looks very sturdy and classy.

(Disclaimer - I have no association with Marcus Bonna - I did receive a trade discount on mine but they are only available from the manufacturer from September - November)
There are four compartmants beside the holes for 2 barrels that would hold barrels, mouthpieces, reeds and a bunch other stuff inside the case plus the large zippered accessory poctet on the outside. The case is about 1/3 smaller (length, width, and depth) than the other comparable cases and is lighter. The cost, at least here in the U.S. varies greatly and very few outlets carry them, and are sold out quickly - Bonna only makes small numbers because they are more famous for their brass and bassoon cases which are really expensive. You would be looking at between US $390-$450 retail for a case if you can find one. The only downside in the case design that I see is that the tenon ends fit into holes in the neoprene and if you use a bunch of cork grease the neoprene could get messy. I have gotten plastic end caps which come on threaded cast iron pipe in the 1/2" and 3/4" sizes and put them in the holes so that the neoprene holes do not get messy.

well the price doesn't seem to bad considering that the US Dollar is weak compared to the Pound. I may contact them directly.

I have a very lightweight, soft-side case that Yamaha put out a few years ago (don't know if they are still available). Bought at the old IMS, DesPlaines, IL, USA for about $125.00. Stores two clarinets--all parts seprately, two mpc, four barrels, small accessory storage compartment with other pockets on inside with two larger storage pockets outside--smaller one large enough to carry a lot of music. I tend to carry a lot of "junk"--tuner, two reed cases, tools, reed knife, pencils/erasers, post-its for marking music, toothbrush & paste, ear plugs, klennex, phone, date book, electicians tape (great for emergency repairs and smaller than duck tape), etc--you get the idea. And usually with a folder full of music in the back compartment. With all this stuff, in spite of it's extremely lightweight construction, it can become quite heavy on the shoulder--especially between those long connections at O'Hare and other airports. But it is far better (smaller and lighter) than my other old conventional hardside cases (two with the Alteri case covers) and, with reasonable care, provides just as much protection for my clarinets. Compared to my friends Bam cases, it is--IMHO--much better in all respects.

Yamaha soft-side: a good case if you can get it (yet).

Have you looked at Soundwear cases ?
Mine is very nice, and it'sa backpack type that I like

Soundwear and Clarinet should bring you to many sites where you can see.
It has lots of spare for all kinds of stuff

Take a look at the $50 double case at wwbw
http://www.wwbw.com/Woodwind-Double-Clarinet-Case-i98050.music

It's sturdy, has a big slot inside for accessories. Has slots for 2 mps, 4 barrels.
Only shortcoming is that its external music pocket for is very shallow and will only hold few sheets comfortably. For $50, you can't go wrong.

Me again......I can second the "motion" for the wwbw double clarinet case. I have one that I bought via eBay, but do not use it in favor of the Yamaha case which I prefer for its superior storage space and the much larger music carry compartment. Nevertheless, it is well built--definately on a par with the Bam cases (senza the music storage)--and well worth its inexpensive price, perhaps even double. My extra case is currently on loan to a college student and she likes it a lot.

I just purchased a Soundwear double case. Wanted a backpack case that would fit all the small "stuff" I carry - the reeds, toothbrush, stop watch, tuner, metro., etc., etc. It has two outside pockets to carry my small stuff -- including my two pegs. Also a separate music pocket large enough orchestra music! Well protected area for clarinets plus 4 barrels and two mouthpieces.

Very well made and a lot less $$ than some of the other ones I had seen and maybe I got lucky, but I didn't have to wait for months for delivery.
