If you're looking for something different, Don Byron would definitely offer it. Artie Shaw, Pee Wee Russell and Buddy DeFranco would also be good to investigate.
There are also lots of earlier players, like Buster Bailey, Omer Simeon, George Lewis, and so many more.
Academy Sound and Video has a very nice CD entitled "Clarinet Marmalade" which features 25 different jazz clarinetists. Fascinating listening!

Jimmy Giuffre is cool, and if you like bass clarinet, there's Eric Dolphy. If you like "older" jazz style, you can also try Barney Bigard.
These three are the only I can think of right now (apart from the ones mentionned by allencole especially Buddy DeFranco!!!).

Don't forget Sidney Bechet. Although I listen to most of the above, I still get most of my (limited ideas) from Charlie Byrd and Miles Davis. I NEVER listen to any of those guys before I practice, I don't want to get to depressed! :-)

If you are looking something orginal...... try to listen David Krakauer
Of course he play klazmer music but as one of the foremost musicians he brought out klezmer-jazz
He is really good!!

I was fortunate enough to do a workshop with him, bought both his CDs and got them autographed lol. Keep listening to eddie daniels too, I listen to him so much - hes amazing.

my fav is paquito d'rivera. Monster jazz player. "jazz chamber trio" and "The Clarinetist - Vol 1" are two recordings I have of his that feature awesome clarinet jazz.

Go to cdbaby.com and do a search for Frank Glover. He has 2 CDs available. I think his stuff may also ge available on iTunes. He is a truly amazing and nowhere near known as he should be. He has a great modern jazz sensibility that you don't hear from that many players. He has a really individual voice.

Swedish Putte Wickman (1924-2006) was one of the greatest clarinettists in jazz, well-known among musicians and jazz listeners all over the world.
During his 60+ years career he made a lot of recordings as a soloist and band leader. He was performing all over Scandinavia, Europe and also visited e.g. Japan and the USA. Two of his best friends, Buddy De Franco and Ken Peplowski, were frequently touring with him. He also made recordings with BDF.
Putte Wickman will be remembered forever thanks to his dark, sensitive sound, personal phrasing and technical ability. He was also very much appreciated for his warm, humble personality and sense of humor.

Anyone know how to order the Putte/Eddie CD in the USA? The link from Eddie's site seems to go to a Europe-only distributor... Putte's CDs are generally hard to find on the internet for us with the weak dollar ...

USA is such a small country way above the sea that i don't think any of the cd stores think it's worth sending cds over there....

There are a bunch of flags for 'pick your country' on the first page of the ordering site, but the USA isn't one of them, which led me to believe it's not so easy to order from that particular site.
I'm always surprised when in the USA (supposedly the land of plenty) so much good music from other countries is not available...on second thought, I'm not surprised at all (plenty of...what?)
