 Update on Backun Cadenza
Author: Brenda Siewert
Date:   2006-11-22 14:41

As some of you know from the couple of threads that are running right now I've just purchased a Leblanc/Backun Cadenza. I've had a few days to play-test it and will make a few comments as to my personal observations. As a disclaimer, I'll add that I only have one Cadenza and have not compared it with multiple Cadenzas. I did not have Woodwind and Brasswind send me more than one to try (which I normally do). So, it's just off the shelf with no hand-selection whatsoever. Also, I don't know a lot of technical stuff about the acoustics of the clarinet, so this review is my personal experience as a semi-pro player. I have, however, played clarinet for over 45 years and have played many, many different brands over those years.

That said, here's my impression of the Cadenza:

It's a great value for someone wanting to step-up into the artist/pro class of playing. Morrie and Leblanc have done a great job with the package you get right out of the box. A player purchasing the instrument won't have to worry about anything else because the Cadenza comes with 2 fantastic Backun barrels and a very nice mouthpiece. It is packaged in a lightweight, backpack type case, so it's perfect for people who have to carry a lot of things around with them and don't want the extra weight of a hardside case.

I found the tone to be excellent throughout the range of the instrument. It didn't have perfect intonation, however, as I don't think any clarinet ever has, but it is one of the best I've tried right out of the box. Overall intonation was very, very good and I think with a few minor adjustments and familiarization of the ear to the instrument it is one that is equal to or better than most clarinets that are much more expensive--including the Buffet R-13. I found the 66mm Cocobolo barrel the best on intonation with the tuner.

It has great, easy volume and a wonderful, flexible tone that would work with any type of playing. This is not only an orchestral clarinet, it would is a perfect choice for jazz and big band as well because of the big sound that comes easily with this instrument.

I did not personally like the mouthpiece for my own playing, but it is a much higher quality than standard stock mouthpieces--more like a Vandoren 5RV or other step-up mouthpieces. I am used to my Kaspar mouthpieces and Kaspar-style mouthpieces by Walter Grabner and Greg Smith, and switched back to my personal mouthpiece right away. The tone of the Cadenza mouthpiece was too bright for my taste.

The key-action is very quiet and the keys are well constructed. The instrument is very nice to hold in the hand and it plays very fluidly. I'm impressed with the overall feel and balance of weight when playing. The keys were also very responsive. It made practicing "Sleigh Ride" a joy.

My bottom line evaluation is that this is going to be a big hit for Leblanc and Backun. It is a fantastic clarinet for under 2,000.00 (if you buy from wwbw or other discount stores). List price is $2,200.00, but I paid just under $1,800.00 for mine. I think it's a much better buy than a standard Buffet R-13 because I've always had to have additional barrels to make my R-13s play in tune and to help "over the break." And, unless you are a Kaspar die-hard like me, you'll love the mouthpiece.

Kudos, Morrie and team!!

I'm going to post some photos of my Cadenza for your viewing pleasure.

Possibly. It does kind of remind me of my old Leblanc LL. But, MUCH better key work and feel in the hand. And, the tuning barrels are very nice!

What is that thing next to the register key....an adjustment or something that plugs a hole?

Just curious, Brenda, what happens when you play this horn with that "other" barrel that I know you have....only curious inasmuch as it would tell me something about the bore of the horn.

On the Cadenza I played, the thing next to the register key appeared to be an adjustable stop, to vary the height of the register key pad opening. It was not actually adjusted to limit the travel at all on the one I played.

Allan, I haven't tried the other barrel yet. I will do that tomorrow when I sit down to practice. Kids are here for Thanksgiving and they don't appreciate my practice sessions.

Maybe Morrie will visit this thread in a day or two and tell us about the bore size of the Cadenza because I've been curious about that as well. It plays like a larger bore instrument (maybe slightly larger than a standard R-13). But, I know very little about acoustic measurements.

The adjustment on the register key is for tuning--I think. Again, maybe Morrie will enlighten us a bit. I'll see what I can find out.

The lower adjustment screw above the bottom right hand side pads is a really good idea. My Opus II has adjustments on both bottom right hand keys that do a similar thing. There is no bridge adjustment on the Cadenza, however, and I really like that on my Opus. But, as I've said before somewhere, you can't really compare a $5,500.00 clarinet with a $2,200.00 clarinet. I know the Legacy has more adjustments than the Opus II--and that would be a more fair comparison. Sadly, I haven't tried a Legacy. I'm sure I would want it if I played it.

Thanks, Brenda! That's pretty much the experience I had with it....the sound is absolutely fantastic, and I was hard-pressed to return to my Opus.

The scales are tipping...(although I hear they're OUT of Cadenzas now! Guess I won't be getting one as soon as I thought.)

Alseg said, "Just curious, Brenda, what happens when you play this horn with that "other" barrel that I know you have....only curious inasmuch as it would tell me something about the bore of the horn."

Allan custom-made a barrel specifically for my Leblanc Opus II. It is a gorgeous and wonderful barrel that plays very well in tune on the Opus II. The Cadenza, however, doesn't have the same acoustical properties as the Opus II, so he wondered what his barrel would be like on the Cadenza. Here are my findings:

Allan, your barrel adds a very beautiful flavor to the instrument. The tuning is very good, but not excellent. The lower register is good. Lower A is 2.5 sharp and lower B is also 2.5 sharp along with B and C. E and F and F# are right on, throat A is 1 cent sharp. Bb with the register key is right on! B over the break is also right on as is C. Open G is just under 1 cent sharp.
Over the break is pretty good all the way up the scale until the altissimo at High D# and then we're flat all the way up.

Hope this tells you something. Again, it has a very nice tone with the Cadenza, but the tuning needs tweeking for it to work with this instrument. So, it must be a bit different to the Opus II.

It tells me that the undercutting and tonehole placement is a bit different, but not much.

That's good to know. I want to repeat that your barrel had a really fantastic tone and great volume with this instrument. It also gave it a bit bigger sound much like when I use the Backun bell. My test of your barrel was with the stock bell.

I'm going to take the Cadenza to rehearsal again and see how it does.

*To add to my thoughts above...the Cadenza did a beautiful job in rehearsal last night. It does require more "voicing" for intonation than the Opus II, but I found it similar to my Buffet R-13 in that regard. Attention needs to be paid to the altissimo register more than is required on the Opus because it tended to be slightly flat in the upper half of the altissimo. Of course, we all know that one needs to pay attention to intonation in the altissimo, so that goes without saying. My Opus is more in tune in the upper registers than the Cadenza. However, I add that the Opus II isn't a fair comparison because it's a more expensive instrument, but that's what I have on hand to compare.

Since my last posting I want to report that I have decided to return the Cadenza to wwbw. The ONLY reason I am doing so is because I really can't afford to keep the Opus II and the Cadenza and the Opus II is a better instrument. I thought about selling the Opus II and keeping the Cadenza because I really loved the sound of the Cadenza, but the Opus II is better in the hand with its superb key-action and intonation. The 1,795.00 price tag wwbw gave me on the Cadenza was great, but I decided I just couldn't afford it right now. Christmas gifts to buy for others and all. So, if anyone's looking for a really, really great Leblanc Backun Cadenza, wwbw's got it back now. Sigh.

I'll keep saving my pennies and perhaps get a Legacy or Symphonie later on. I'm glad I got to spend what time I did with the Cadenza so I can give a recommendation to others who might be thinking of buying a new instrument. It's a real gem. However, side-by-side comparison with my trusty Opus II decided the deal for me. And, as I mentioned earlier, one must remember that the Opus II is a much more expensive instrument, so to compare isn't truly fair.

Stick with the opus II.... that's probably the best out there in regards to intonation and others. the legacy is flashy compared to the speak softly and carry a big stick opus. be happy with what you have. if i had an opus, my search would probably be at an end. but until then.... more excuses to keeep searching while at the same time practicing.

thanks for the report though on the cadenza

You are probably right. I've played Opus clarinets for several years and found them to be truly excellent in every way. I do have Backun barrels and bell (along with a Segal barrel for extra tone), so I have the best of both worlds already.
