 Suggestions for "new" pieces
Author: MaggieMay

Hi, I'm about Grade 5 (UK) standard, living in France and have got to the end of the classical clarinet selections 'clarinette classique" which are fairly standard fare here up to my level.
Do you have any suggestions for what I could try next : collections of classical music with either piano or CD accompaniment (or any type of music , but I like playing classical pieces)? My teacher is lacking inspiration somewhat and I'm sure there are lots of collections out there in the US and the UK which we never see in the stores here or perhaps collections that you use as 'standard fare' for teaching.
I would really appreciate your feedback.
(I'm an adult player by the way, late starter, hi there Ginny!)

You're at the stage when you should stop playing arrangements and start playing real clarinet music.

The ABRSM website lists their grade pieces; this is a good start. The obvious pieces you should be looking at include:

Mozart Concerto (slow movement only).
Saint-Saens sonata.
Lutoslawski Dance Preludes.
Brahms Sonatas (middle movements only).

Lots of people will howl with protest and tell you that the Brahms is really really hard, and the Mozart too, and you shouldn't touch them. The ABRSM thinks otherwise. Yes they are hard to play musically. Technically they aren't very hard.

The ABRSM also produces CDs with piano accompaniments of the grade pieces, which you might be able to order from England.

-----------

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Try Fantasy pieces by Niels Wilhelm Gade and Four short pieces by Howard Ferguson. Gade's piece is speically good for good tone development and I would reccomend to try to play it out of memory.

Good luck playing.

Thanks for your excellent suggestion and also for taking the time to reply. I got right on to the ABRSM website and am looking forward to massacring a bit of Mozart....
