 Eb clarinet mouthpiece won't fit
Author: packrat

I just bought an Eb soprano clarinet mouthpiece off the internet to experiment with. Ok, don't laugh, but the darn thing won't fit into the barrel. I have a nice vintage Selmer Eb that about 45 years old. I've never had this problem with a Bb before either. Anybody have this problem before?

Will it hurt to remove the cork and sand the mouthpiece and recork it to get it to fit? It's about a mm larger than the inside of the barrel.

I have three clarinets from the same manufacturer, 2 Bb and an A. They all have slightly different barrel sizes.

I think it is a plot to make us all develop G.A.S.

How did you deal with the problem?

One has a totally different mouthpiece which is smaller - a Vandoren 5RV - that is what came with it.

One has a B40 which came with it but doesn't fit now that it has been played a lot and the cork has compacted a bit,so gets packed with paper, one didn't come with a mouthpiece but the B40 fits it perfectly.

These last two have just gone off on holiday and so hopefully will come back agreeing which size moutpiece they want to use!

Brown parcel paper works ok in a pinch to pad things out.

the risk you take sanding it down is that the mouthpiece doesn't work very well on the instrument, as some mouthpieces and instruments just don't. On the other hand it could be excellent.

I only have experience with 2 clarinets, the artley 17s, and buffet b12, anyways a horn/clarinet dealer sized the artley and sold me a Yamaha 4C for the artley, and it was always very tight, however it fits in the buffet easier so I use it there, and the mouthpiece from the buffet works fine in the artley's, so Yamaha's are tight, and Buffet's may be slightly larger than Artley's, but the "expert" felt that the Yamaha was OK with the Artley, so I'm inclined to think the experts aren't really thinking about kids taking these apart and are more thinking about adult usage.

what kind of mouthpiece is it you bought off the good old buy-it-before-you-try-it internet?
what were you using before that fit?
Is the barrel selmer also?

If you know what you are doing, sanding will not damage the mouthpiece. But doing it buy hand to remove only 1mm will take about 40minutes of sanding. It is not fun, I have done similar things. An easier way is to take it to a repair person with a lathe- that would only take about 2 minutes (max).

PS. the lathe would do a cleaner job, too.

Update: Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas!

The old mouthpiece that fit was a Selmer as well. I bought a used LeBlanc off the internet for 10.00 just to try, because the old Selmer was really stuffy. I took a deep breath and some sand screen (not sand paper) and wrapped my hand with a potholder because as I sanded it got really hot. I figured if I messed it up I was out a few bucks for a little experience. I concentrated on the rim of the mouthpiece and then later the top edge above the cork. I worked the strip of sand screen with my husband holding it. After about 5 minutes, I cleaned it up and checked it in the barrel and IT FIT!!!!! Not only did it fit really well, but I didn't even mess up the cork. Yeah!!!!!!

I'm so glad I did this, because although I don't know what model the LeBlanc mouthpiece is, it is really good. Not only is it better than my Selmer HS, but it's also better than the B40 I also purchased (at least for me). Thank you everyone for your responses.
