Much more likely something imagined by the journalist, or mis-translated from the Spanish, given the general level of (in)accuracy of the rest of the article.

It's probably raw linseed oil, which penetrates a little into the softer woods (i.e., anything except grenadilla) and then polymerizes (hardens) and can be polished.
