tip openings and length of lay questions

First of all let me state that I understand that mouthpiece selection is a very personal thing and that I should try many. But to narrow it down I want to see if I understand a few basic points. I've gotten a lot of very good information through the bulletin board, however I want to make sure my assumptions are correct. I need clarification. So here are my questions.

I have a mouthpiece I like because of it's response and articulation, however I don't feel as if I project as well in a large group.

1) If I go to one or more mouthpiece comparison charts (assuming the method of measurement is the same) should I expect to get similar response and articulation from comparable mouthpieces that measure the same in tip opening and length of lay?

2) If so then I should select ones to try that have bore and/or material configuations that tend to project more? Is there a certain type bore that I could expect to have a brighter tone? Slightly higher in pitch? Or better projection?

3) I'm also in the market for an Eb mouthpiece. Will the mouthpiece charts for Bb clarinet also be valid for comparing Eb mouthpieces. So for instant if a Vandoren B-40 is the closest to a Bay MO-M should I expect it to "handle" in a similar way. (Notice I didn't say sound the same)

If I'm completely off base here please let me know. I know it won't be this simple because each mouthpiece within brand will be different, but as a generalization am I right?

Similar tip opening and length of lay might suggest similar reed strengths but I'm not sure response and articulatiion would be similar. That might have to do more with other variables. You might look to Yahoo site ....mouthpieceworks.....they will have lots of ideas.

Why not contact a noted mouthpiece craftsman such as Brad Behn or Clark Fobes and ask them your questions? Surely these 2 and others could answer your questions quite effectively.

Unfortunately the comparison of even ALL the dimensions of a lay will will only give you vague starting point. Over the years I have found what feel right for me and just try mouthpieces until I get a good match. Just jump into the fray with a manufacturer/maker and work your way around the sizes from there. If you don't feel there is anything there with four different sizes or so, try a different brand.

There is NO substitution for just trying mouthpieces.
