Jewish songs on the major scale
Author: allencole
Date:   2006-11-09 14:48

I have a beginner who would like to learn some Hannukah [sic] songs, but I'm trying to use these songs to refine and reinforce the major scale.

Dreydl Dreydl is already in her band book.

Other Jewish children's songs would probably do well also. The problem is that so many represent something other than the major scale, and I don't want to address non-major tonality until we've spent some time on major.

At the same time, my knowledge of Jewish music is very limited, and I need to make sure to find songs that she already knows, and that I can verify her accuracy on.

I can probably get longer term solutions from Tara Music, but for now would like to know of any local or internet resources that I could tap over the next week or two to get the ball rolling.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Allen Cole

I know one Jewish song that major:
"Tsena, tsena".

Don't know whether you'd call it a Hannukah song, but I've played it at wedding receptions.

Ben, thanks for the link to the klezmer arrangements, I hadn't seen this site before and it's something our band is alway on the lookout for. Ken

Ken,

just in case - contact the author when you're about to actually perform these pieces; AFAIK he doesn't charge in any way but would like to honorably mentioned on the programme sheet etc.

(I'm just adding this because the copyright page is in German only)

Try these:

Ahavat Hadassah
Al Kol Eyleh
Erev Ba
Haleluyah (music: Kobi Oshrat, words: Shimrit Or)
Ma'Oz Tzur (Rock of Ages)
Shtiler Bulgar (And the Angels Sing)
(Yeish Lanu) Ta'ish

There are a number of major key tunes in the liturgy, and dozens of adapted melodies that work for Adon Olam, many in major.

<<And the Angels Sing>> as mentioned above, done by BG, I believe with Ziggy Elman on trumpet, one of the hottest "frailachs" ever.
Tsena Tsena is def. major key, and loads of fun.
Hava Nagila, of course.
As far as Chanukah, specific songs, for some reason my brain is retrieving only Purim stuff.....must be Jonesing for a Hamantaschen, or just the lingering effects of cervical disk surgery (and narcs).

ok....here is a link.I contacted the Mayven. Try this:

I know really a lot of Hannukah songs but unfortunately I have no idea what are their names. The only two ones I can think of that I remember the names are Maoz Tsur and Ner Li Ner Li (both in major scales).

Thanks for that list, Ralph. It'll be a great starting point. I guess I'll also take a closer look at "Lambchop's Special Hannukah" this year.

I seem to recall that there was an oratorio by either Handel or Purcell about Judah Macabee. Don't know how popular that is in the community. Now, I've gotta find out what some of these things SOUND like...<g>

Thanks again for getting me pointed in the right direction.

Thanks.
Right now my neck and shoulder feel like the Ma'oh Tzur (pron. sore...sic, rock of ages)

I suppose selections from Fiddler On The Roof are not appropriate?

Most of the stuff from 'Fiddler' is not helpful in reinforcing the major scale. "Matchmaker" might be a possibility, but I can't remember the bridge.

Certainly nothing with the instructional value of "Joy to the World" or "The First Noel." It's hard to get that combination of linearity and familiarity.

'Frosty the Snowman' might be secular enough, but at a much greater level of difficulty. Ditto for "Country Gardens."

Besides the kid asked for a Hannukah song and I'd like to come through.

This is why the search for good instructional songs never ends.

Your request turned out to be surprisingly tough. The tunes I listed above were from the 2-inch-thick fake books from two different bands.

Here are some web finds:
