 Mendelssohn Octet transcibed for clarinets

I absolutely love Mendelssohn's Octet for Strings in Eb Major. If you look at the score and you see complex and stunning it is you can't help but be amazed. So being that I have too much time on my hands. I got a hold of the parts and decided to make a except. However due to the fact that I do not own a bass clarinet I couldn't lay the Cello parts down and for the first violin part (which an Eb clarinet would be perfect for range wise) I played flute which I'm decently profient at. For the remaining parts I used Bb Clarinets and Acoustica Sound mixer to lay the parts down.

I'm not posting this to show off my little product of fun, but It would be AWESOME to see this octet performed at Clarinet Fest or somewhere else. The Key is perfect, the range of instruments is near perfect (violas go down a full step lower than the Bb Clarinet).

I uploaded my excerpt to yousendit.com. I believe that since this isn't copy righted material that I am not breaking any laws.

Let me know what you think as to the viability of this being performed with Clarinets. Here is the link:

thanks in advance :)

I just downloaded it. A lot of hiss and more midi sound than real (my PC's old sound card?) but it sounds great! More importantly, it sounds 'exciting'.
Is that really all your own work? Amazing!

Any chance of you giving your transposed piece to us to have a closer look.

I promise not to change anything.

Then again...

USA lawyers vs italian lawyers?

Would Steven Spielberg be interested in the film rights?

I'm already working on the script!

Steve :-)

Thanks for the compliment!

If you go to free-scores.com you can download the score and parts. I simply just transposed on sight. I'm pretty naturally able to do so with out thinking about it and actually writing out is time consuming.

The London Bach Clarinet Ensemble would be interested in perhaps trying it out, could you email me the parts etc? Is it on Sibelius?

Peter,

As I understand, he didn't re-write the pieces, but used the score you can find here:

http://www.free-scores.com/partitions_gratuites_Felix-Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.htm

So I guess he played the first part as it's written on his flute and transposed the rest up to Fmajor for clarinets. The though of doing this on sight brings me out in a cold sweat!

For clarinets only, you could try playing the octet as it is - i.e. without changing the key - though I think I'd prefer it with only one flat!

I think it's a fascinating subject - taking well known works and adapting them for other instruments. There's so much copyright-free material around now.

Steve
