Here is a quote from Backun's site about his mouthpieces.
"These mouthpieces take advantage of the laws of physics and science with the use of The Boundary Layer; a complex property that increases the vibration and response of the reed, as it floats on the mouthpiece table. In addition to this, a series of grooves complete the Resonance Tempering - a technique that was devised to strengthen the tip, table and rails of the mouthpiece in order to assure accurate facings and specifications that can be reproduced time and time again"
What is "the boundary layer", what is "resonance tempering"
Are these just made up terms? I suspect that these are fancy marketing ideas to describe things that other mouthpiece makers already have been doing.
I have tried the Backun, and don't get me wrong, it's a solid MP...but it is not revolutionary and in fact I prefer my Vandoren.

If you go to the search engine feature located near the top of your post, type in backun mouthpiece, hit the return on your keyboard, you will find over 280 hits that should keep your interest more than piqued for a month of Sundays.

(i was trying to be funny, and meant no disrespect whatsoever to Mr Backun, while i don't play any of his gear i have a huge amount of respect for his artistry)

1) Call Backun and speak to Morrie. He is a nice guy and will be happy to answer your questions. Why direct them to the board, where people may not know the answer? 2) If you don't like the mouthpiece, don't buy it.

Thanks.....And all along I thought it refered to LLBean clothing.
What is inherent in the particular reed-mouthpiece interface layer that is being exploited in this mouthpiece?
How does it differ from other brands?
Is it quatifiable or purely qualitative?
How does he know this? (yeah, I know...."For he <is> the kwizatz haderach")*

Excellent questions. I was just answering the question posted above, "What is the boundary layer" and trying to show that Backun didn't make the term up. However, though boundary layer is a real concept from the field of aereodynamics, as your questions suggest, its use here might be only marketing hype.

Uh...ya think? lol. All I can do is laugh at that mouthpiece terminology that Backun claims. wow. Am I crazy here? Is it possible to actually make a significantly better professional mouthpiece, considering modern clarinet design and all the fine mouthpieces available today? I am very disturbed at the follow the leader, hear with your eyes, mentality. Again, all I can say is...wow.
BTW, I have a 2005 Buffet plastic mouthpiece to sell... it has mojo flow dynamical thermoplastic nucleo-metaphysical resonance built into the design. $800 bucks. Ricardo played it once. Let me know if you are interested.

Ricky Ricardo? Desi on bongos?
No, I am holding out for Lucy. Or at least the Mertz's
Montalbon, you say? No, I want one from Tattoo.
Metaphysical? Aquinian? Hegelian? Tectonic?
Heck, I went for my meta-physical and the doc sent me for a colonoscopy.
All in good fun, but perhaps Morrie, who is a delight to discourse with, will explain it. There are a number of physicists on the bulletin board, as well as innumerable scientists who, I am certain, would appreciate the intricacies.

If we are TOO successful at applying advanced aerodynamic principles to clarinet design, we may find ourselves in the unhappy situation where our clarinets are exceeding Mach 1, and consequently we are outrunning our acoustic cone and thus unable to hear ourselves what it is we are playing (while, of course, breaking windows and damaging eardrums all around us). I suggest that Mr. Backun et al proceed with extreme caution in their use of boundary layer control, lest we incur the wrath of the audience community, not to mention litigation involving large sums of money.....

Well, I've been in marketing myself (I'm now back into engineering which I consider more "honest", but that probably depends on the engineer), and the the most obvious problem with a product you'd like to sell is always "how do I get the buyers' attention?". In that light, I congratulate Mr. Backun for his wise choice of words - mission accomplished.

. . . then there are all the dufi (plural of dufus?) such as I who don't comprehend the technicalities related to airflow through the mouthpiece, but we know what sort of sounds we like to hear. If it sounds nice when you play it, I want one - if it sounds nice when I play it, I want a dozen!! Eu

It is "dufim" from the Aramaic plural, subverted by the Hebraic in 2 BCE and later terned into dufi by the latin pleuralization.
Dufus was a Syrian prince who planted seeds from a merchant who said they will yield a great crop that would at once provide solice and consternation.. The crop was later classified as arundo dufus, and misread as donax by the original Lannaen toxonomizers.
Thus, all clarinetists are dufim, or dufi as the case may be.

Since Morrie obviously "ghosts" the BB it would be nice for him to explain these concepts used in his marketing so that we all do not get headaches applying various Physics explanations when indeed they are not accurate descriptions of the words used. We've already had some long winded discussions on the terms ending in no real resolution.
Allan - I love your declension and root of our favorite terms. Perhaps now that you will be retired soon you can devote more time to making wonderful barrels.

I'm sad to see another surgeon retire early...we have one in our family and he did the same. BUT, I understand. Yes, now you'll be able to devote more time to the music world. Kudos!

. . . but Allan, you gotta keep your mind and body occupied making all of us dufi . . .er, dufim . . . those nice barrels. I might be needing one and I wouldn't know how to make my own.
Now, about those mouthpieces, marketing hype, etc. -- there are so darn many choices out there, all with competing claims to this and that, everything from incomprehensible boundary layer fluid dynamics to squeek-proof tables, that us po' folk out here, slogging our way through hundreds of posts hither, thither, and yon, are completely inundated with data, hype, opinions, etc., ad nausem. We can't try 'em all, so we takes our chances, tries out any we can get hold of, then puts all the names on the wall and (while wearing 3 blindfolds - triple blind is more scientific) throws the proverbial SWAG dart at 'em to select the ONE!! That's equifinality, folks!! Eu

Any body played on Eaton's mouth piece?
Mr.Eaton is making absolutely FANTASTIC mouth pieces WITHOUT using those pseudo physics terms.
