Hi John. Thanks for posting the"top ten".

You know, a colleague of mine once remarked, "There are statues and other permanent tributes to great musicians and composers everywhere in the world. Has anyone ever seen one of a music critic?" - Adolph "Bud" Herseth.

Greg -

Brahms had a sharp tongue. He was walking with the critic Hanslick, who said: "Maestro, that is the house I was born in."

Brahms: "Ah, and when you die perhaps they will put up a sign."

Hanslich (very flattered): "And what will it say?"

Brahms: "For Sale."

John -

While I don't think anyone would disagree with the Playbill Arts list, I'd be willing to bet it was based on reputation rather than listening to actual concerts.

Daniel Barenboim has moulded the Berlin Staatskapelle into an outstanding band. I heard two Berlin Staatskapelle concerts recently, and they were the most interesting orchestral playing I've heard in a long time.

Good to see he LSO is in the top five. Shame the Philharmonia are at the bottom of that list.

Thanks John for that amusing list.
This might also get up the noses of my fellow Scots. Neither of the big bands are mentioned. Where did they come ?.....just out of curiosity...were they even there...??

Actually, I'm somewhat partial to the orchestra at Covent Gardens, but it doesn't appear that opera orchestras (even at La Scala) fared very well. Maybe they suffer too much from all those distractions others have talked about. Eu

P.S. Paul, what was that "computer stuff" that flew by so quickly?

I tried to post a photo of "Manneken Pis" as Elvis (famous Belgian Statue) and label it "Statue of Music Critic" in honor of Bud Herseth. I had no luck with either bit map or gif..........just Google the silly thing.

I'd be very curious to see a similar ranking of U.S. orchestras...

In a 1983 article,

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,923579-1,00.html

Time magazine ranked the US orchestras:

6. Cleveland
7. New York
8. San Francisco
9. Pittsburgh

Honorable mention: Minnesota, Dallas, Washington (National), Cincinnati, Houston, Rochester, Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta, Buffalo Philharmonic, Denver, Utah

Never ceases to amaze me just how much credence people place in rankings.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
